 1565Turks lay siege to the island of Malta defended by the Knights of Malta. Siege was finally lifted on September 11.
 1643Battle of Rocroi, Belgium. French smash through the entire Spanish army, slaying 8,000 elite Spanish infantry and taking another 7,000 prisoner. One of the darkest days in Spanish military history.
 1692Battle of La Hogue. Combined Dutch and English fleet of ninety-six ships disperse French fleet of one hundred eleven.
