  685Battle of Nechtan's Mere. Picts defeat Northumbrians freeing themselves from Northumbrian domination.
 1631City of Magdeburg falls to Imperialists. In the next three days, Walloons and Croats massacres most of the civilian population and garrison.
 1756Battle of Minorca. British admiral Byng attacked Richelieu's blocking force and failed. Back in England, Byng was court-martialed and shot on his own quarterdeck.
 1848Battle of Morazzone. Outnumbered, Garibaldi's Volunteers made a skilful retreat to Arona.
 1941German paratroop assault on island of Crete.
