 1756Calcutta garrison surrenders. 146 survivors placed into the Black Hole -- only 23 survived until morning.
 1779Battle of Stono Ferry. American militia badly beaten by British rearguard.
 1782The United States chooses the Eagle as it's symbol.
 1783Battle of Cuddalore. One of five fruitless confrontations between Admiral Sir Edward Hughes and the French under Suffren.
 1783Battle of Pondicherry. British fleet of 30 ships, their masts and rigging badly damaged, were unable to successfully close with French fleet.
 1900Boxer rebellion begins in Peking by killing the German foreign minister and laying siege to the foreign legations.
 1945Australians capture Sarawak Island off Borneo.
