Events of Military significance on this day:
 1499Battle of Lepanto I. In the first major Turkish naval victory, Ottoman fleet defeated Venetian Navy forcing Venice to yield some of her Grecian trading posts.
 1696Peter the Great captured fortress city of Azov only to lose it in 14 years later.
 1809Battle of Talavera. The Spanish broke and fled leaving the British to defeat the French on their own. Wellington was too weak after the battle to pursue and retired to Portugal.
 1914Austria invades Serbia.
 1944Operation Cobra, the breakout from Normandy began.
