 1781Battle of Chesapeake Capes. French fleet defeats British depriving Cornwallis of naval support at Yorktown.
 1842Battle of Ghoaine. British smash through Afghan blocking force.
 1862Second Battle of Bull Run, a Confederate victory.
 1862First Battle of Richmond. Federal troops badly beaten losing three quarters of their forces as casualties or prisoners.
 1870Battle of Beaumont, French surprise Prussians during the Franco-Prussian War.
