 1885Battle of Fisher's Hill. Sheridan's Federals defeat Confederates taking many prisoners.
 1918The Battle of St. Mihiel, the first all-American operation in Word War I. Colonel George S. Patton leads the United States' first tank assault (304 Tank Brigade) to mixed results. Patton was criticized for exceeding orders in attempting to breach the Hindenburg line -- a behavior pattern that would be repeated 25 years later.
