Superliners

Alright. You could be forgiven for thinking this was all a tease. Surely the boat in the photo above is not a Superliner? Absolutely not. In fact it's something of a rust bucket! And no, the couple in the foreground who had carrried their garden chairs over the pebbles to claim front row seats were not there to watch aging old tankers. They were there early to get front row seats for the main show, which would include the Maiden Voyage of the world's biggest cruise ship - Royal Caribbean's "Independence of the Seas" - to be followed by Cunard's latest regal cruise ship - the "Queen Victoria" - and bringing up the rear would be the massive P&O ship, the "Ventura".

The location was Calshot in Hampshire, at the entrance to
Southampton Water, past which the three Superliners would sail on the afternoon of May 2nd., 2008. It's a terrific location, steeped in history, and an unsurpassable vantage point for viewing the ships. They pass by so closely in the channel that you feel you could touch them. And a crowd of ship-watchers had turned out to witness the procession. You can see them all by following the links below.
