25.09.2001 Lincoln Child & Douglas Preston, "The Ice Limit" - the latest installment. And again a good adventure yarn. When I read the synopsis, it reminded me a bit of "Hungry as the Sea" by Wilbur Smith and Preston & Child are definitely a good choice for any fan of Wilbur Smith. Looking for a good adventure novel? Any book from those 2 is recommended..... 20.09.2001 Now I am reading a paperback my mom gave me. Something I would not have touched with a ten-foot-pole a few years ago - but as I get older, I get more tolerant and more relaxed about myself and how people perceive me (i.e. I care less, as long as I feel good about something). Who gives a toss anyway, do as you please! Anyway, anyway - it's one of those low-level women things, you know the kind, not quite properly dressed lady with long flying hair and a bare-chested beau on the cover, appropriately titled "Island flame" (by Karen Robards)..... Blimey! That's close to porn..... and a really funny read! Although, was the fun intended? The author could not possibly have meant this to be taken seriously? I started it last night in the car on the way home from work and already read 200 pages. Which puts me at a par with Goethe, at least as far as quantity is concerned, not quality! 19.09.2001 "The first novel by Kim Stanley Robinson in the astounding trilogy, "Red Mars", chronicles the lives of the first arrivals to Mars. The planet that the settlers find is empty of life and many of the pioneers want to begin changing the ecosystem right away to be suitable for human life. But the purity of the stark landscape convinces some scientists that it should be preserved. The stakes are high and the players on both sides range from politically naive idealists to ambitious manipulators without discernible scruples. No one can be sure that "terraforming" the planet will succeed, but it is certain to change the face of Mars beyond recognition. Red Mars won the 1994 Nebula Award." Sorry, I stole that synopsis from Amazon.... Had a glass of white wine with dinner and feel a bit stupid. Definetely not in the position to offer something insightful about this book..... Liked it though, especially that each chapter was told from the viewpoint of different person in the story. Added some interessting twists. The next book will be "Green Mars", I already added that to my Amazon Shopping Cart...... 02.09.2001 Jeff Long, "The Descent" - Scared of monsters, caves and the dark? Don't read this! My dad saw monsters popping out from behind every bush for days.... What I want to know, when are they publishing the sequel? I hate it when a book finishes with all these loose ends dangling about! |
Books, books and books......... |
...what do you mean, 3 links to the same provider aren't enough!!? :-) |
My all-time favourites... Some dazzling scenery, adventure, heaving bossoms, surprising plot-twists, suspense, good-looking heroes, really mean bad guys, conspiracies and all that after 8 hours at work and low brainpower? Fear not, Wilbur Smith will keep you entertained for hours! Or perhaps some crime busting in ancient Rome? Try Lindsey Davis' hero Marcus Didius Falco, always good for a chuckle and you won't figure out who's dunnit until the very last page. More classic crime? Sorry, Agatha, but you are boring the pants off me! Try some Dorothy Sayers instead, "Gaudy Night" is one of my favourites..... A bit more up-tp-date version? Elizabeth George is American, but you would never guess, true British crime novels.... Stephen King - not only horror, but some genuinely good story telling, too! Not enough horror? Try Dean Koontz..... Oh, by the way, a neat mixture between Wilbur and the above two: Douglas Preston & Lincoln Child. With every single installment I was up all night, absolutely impossible to put down! Try "Riptide"! |
