26.04.2001 Been to the Sting concert yesterday at the pyramids. We were running a little late, so by the time we reached the road leading to it, the traffic was horrenduos and in ended up in a total gridlock. So we decided to walk the last bit, accross the desert towards the pyramids, with lots of other people that got fed-up sitting in their cars. In the end the walk and the scenery was more fun than the actual concert, especially because we got a place pretty far back and did not see that much anyway. But the pyramids and the sphinx at night are definitely worth the visit! We arrived back in Alex at 4.30 in the morning and I was at work at 11 - needless to say, I wasn't exactly with it and had to do everything twice. Just ordered a pizza and will collapse right after eating it.... 21.04.2001 Had my house warming party on Thursday night. A friend is running a party service, so she brought over the food, the other guest brought the booze. Anyway, she went slightly overboard and I can now happily live out of my freezer for the next couple of weeks! Just heating up a bacon Quiche....... Following an old family tradition, after the last guest had left, I cleaned up the place and did the washing up 'till 3.30 a.m., bliss! The next morning I had 2 paracetamols for breakfast - not sure if it was the bad Egyptian white wine of the 5 whiskey cola I had before that..... 15.04.2001 What cracked me up the most this week: Watching Fatboy Slim's new video, "Weapon of choice" - Christopher Walken in a grey suit, red tie, dancing (!) through an empty hotel lobby. And, amazingly, he is really good at it! And he looks as if he's having fun, too! Haven't enjoyed seeing him that much since Pulp Fiction! 14.04.2001 Well, the satelite is installed and working (of a fashion) and I now have the joy of watching RTL, RTL II and Super RTL, all in the Austrian installment. Who could ask for more.... On the up-side, it is Easter and I have 3 days off, hurray! I just don't get why Easter Monday ia a national holiday in an islamic country. And I started an online bookclub, even had some friends from school join up. Now how do I get them to contribute? Too far away to threaten them with physical violence... Oh, hey, another new-flat-problem has been solved: We managed to open my back-door in the kitchen (painted shut). No small victory, the garbage bags were already piling up.... 08.04.2001 Did I mention that I have a problem with gas boilers? There was the one in my flat in Agamy that broke, fair enough. 3 days without hot water, never mind, have had worse. So, in comes the new one. Done Egyptian style - not properly installed, hence I lived with the screeching wonder. Even Sadie and Steve next door could hear it. Who needs an alarm in the morning, when your neighbor usese the loo at six in the morning and the boiler starts screeching the national anthem..... Anyway, I moved! Guess what, the boiler in the kitchen did not work! Some impromptu fixing by my landlord, open boiler, wires sticking out, thermostat not working, but hot water. Did not quite hear it, when he told me to only plug it in for a short while, because the thermostat is not working..... So, I plug it in, do my washing up and wander away.... 4 hours and several cappucinos later - have you ever seen bubbling electrical wires, nicely framed by billowing smoke and accompanied by the sweet smell of burning plastic? Well, I have! It seems to be properly fixed now.... Hold on, let me just go and have a look..... 03.04.2001 Needless to say, I didn't pack a thing that night. I got up Friday morning at 11 and claimed a new speed record - I packed all my worthly belongings (well, at least the Egyptian bit) in 2 1/2 hours. Two trips by car to Alex and everything was over there. My friend's car decided to break down right after, so we went to dinner by tram. 25 piasters to anywhere in Alex, who could resist. Had 'foul' and 'falafel' and a walk along the corniche afterwards. Took me most of the following day to unpack and figure out, where to put it all. Spent 4 days now in the new flat and quite like it. You can hear the tram going by, but that doesn't bother me, I am so glad to smell the sweet smell of too many cars and see the sun go down in a haze of smog..... |
