Chyahwest Siberians

chyahwest history

We obtained our first Siberian Husky, Smokey (CH Chyah's Bit Of Smokey Lobo, CD) in 1989. I had always wanted a Siberian but never had the time and place to have one. Once I had our one acre fenced yard completed my wife allowed me to have one and we started looking. Of course what I wanted was a Black and White with Blue Eyes. We had found a local breeder (Barbara Foard - Chyah's Siberians) that had a litter for sale, but No Black/White - Blue Eyes. There were two Gray and White's and one was Bi-eyed. We went over to see the puppies, and the parents. The bi-eyed Puppy came right up to us and was really friendly and we fell in love.  We talked to Barbara and was given all of their good and bad traits. I kind of thought that she was trying to talk us out of it. Then came all of the questions about our facilities. I didn't realize at the time, but Barbara was just making sure that the puppy was getting a good home that was prepared for a Siberian. After taking Smokey home we kept in close touch with Barbara. Smokey was starting to fill out and was looking fantastic. Barbara thought that he would do good in the breed ring. I was not into conformation showing just Obedience with a Shetland Sheepdog. We were new to the conformation ring and I was too chicken to go in there so I talked my wife (Susan) to show him. We got a couple of placement ribbons but did not have the knowledge or experience to show him to his best. Smokey was entered in the Open Dog class in April, 1991 at the Chesapeake Siberian Husky Club's Specialty and Barbara was there. We noticed that Barbara only had a Bitch to show so we asked her if she would show Smokey. She agreed and went on to win the Open Dog class. Winner's Dog was going in the ring when they were calling for the Open Bitch class in the other ring. Barbara told her husband (Clarence) that she wanted Smokey for winners and poor Clarence had to go in the ring and was not ready for that at all with his work boots on. Smokey did take Winner's Dog for a 5 point major under judge Charles Ruppert. Barbara and a friend of hers (Grace) helped to show Smokey and finish his championship.

We have gotten three other Siberians from Clarence and Barbara and have expanded Chyah's Siberians to Chyahwest Siberians. I took some classes and started to show in the conformation ring myself and finished my fist championship on Klassy.
