Most countries celebrate the New Year on January 1st. There are parties that last to midnight on the 31st of December, and then there are usually spectacular fireworks. Decades, centuries, and millenniums are all celebrated with a bigger bang than the rest. People will often count down the last ten seconds until 12 o' clock and then sing the song Auld Lang Syne. Auld Lang Syne is a Scottish phrase and song, and a poet named Robert Burns wrote his own version of the song in the 1700's. The song is thought to be much older.

AULD LANG SYNE

Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
and never brought to mind?
Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
and auld lang syne?

For auld lang syne, my dear,
for auld lang syne,
We'll take a cup o' kindness yet,
and auld lang syne!
