Valentine's Day is said to have come about during the third century. There was a Bishop and a Saint, known as Saint Valentine. This was time of barbaric rituals and war. The emperor of the country forbade his soldiers to wed or even consider love, but Bishop Valentine married soldiers to their lovers in secret.
He was thrown in prison, where he is said to have fallen in love with the jailor's blind daughter. She also loved him. It is said that he may have healed her and made her able to see.
Bishop Valentine was sentenced to death, and he sent a letter to his sweetheart before he died. This love letter came to be the first valentine.
People started the tradition and held Valentine's Day on February 14th to remember Saint Valentine who died in 269 AD. It is a day to celebrate love in all it forms. Friends and family and those who are in love celebrate with candy cards and flowers.

Love is patient, love is kind.  It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.
I Corinthians 13:4-7

How do I love thee?
Let me count the ways.
I love to the depth and breadth and height my soul can reach, when feeling out of sight
For the ends of being and ideal grace....
Smiles, tears, of all my life;
and, if God choose,
I shall but love thee better after death.
Elizabeth Barrett Browning
