A holdiay that originated in Ireland, St. Patrick's Day has become widely known and celebrated. It began as a day set aside to remember St. Patrick, who was a missionary in Ireland, after becoming free from slavery. Even though he was an Irish native, the other bishops were reluctant to let him do what he called his calling, which was to preach Christianity. The shamrock is associated with St. Patrick's Day, because it is an Irish symbol of good luck, and it is also how St. Patrick used to explain the Trinity. The three leaves on one plant represent how God, the Father, God, the Son, and God, the Holy Spirit, are all one person.

An Irish Blessing
May you always have work
for your hands to do.
May your pocket hold always
a coin or two,
May the rainbow be certain
to follow each rain
May the hand of a friend
always be near you.
And may God fill your heart
with gladness to cheer you.
