"THERE IS THEREFORE NO CONDEMNATION TO THEM WHICH ARE IN CHRIST JESUS, WHO WALK NOT AFTER THE FLESH,BUT AFTER THE SPIRIT." (Ro 8:1) |
The Holy Spirit, Spiritual Gifts The Holy Spirit is described in the Old Testament as falling upon various individuals, and Moses expressed his wish that the Spirit would fall on all the Lord's people (Nu. 11:29). In the New Testament we see the Holy Spirit in action throughout: in the virgin birth of Jesus (Matt. 1:18;Luke 1:35); in Jesus' baptism (Luke 3:22); in Jesus' resistance of Satan (Luke 4:1); in the exorcism of demons (Matt. 12:28); in the evangelism and establishment of churches as described in the book of Acts and the Epistles (Acts 2; Rom. 5:50). Blasphemy of the Holy Spirit was named as the only unforgivable sin (Matt. 12:31-32). The increased ministry of the Holy Spirit in the world depended upon Jesus' departure; and then the Holy Spirit would come as a paraclete, an advocate and comforter for the people (John 14:26; 16:7-15). As previously mentioned, Jesus told his disciples that they would be embued with power from on high: that they were to evangelize, baptize in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, have the ability to cast out demons, heal the sick, speak with new tongues, and be protected from poisonous substances (Matt. 28:19; Mk. 16:17-18; Lk. 24:47; Acts 1:8). These "signs following" (Mk. 16:17) are seen in the book of Acts in the manifestation of the Holy Spirit in a dramatic way, and in the exercise of spiritual gifts by various people. The principle is that a person may open himself or herself to receive the Holy Spirit, but may also put a damper on the operation of the Holy Spirit in his or her life. Paul says "Be not drunk with wine, . . . but be filled with the Spirit"; and again, "Quench not the Spirit" (Eph. 5:18; I Thess. 5:19). The "spiritual gifts" are designated in the epistles and are declared to be a potential of every believer. "Now, there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit" (I Corinthians 12:4). The categories of gifts are set out in Romans 12:6-13; I Cor. 12-14; Eph. 4:11): Apostles Prophets and prophecy Ministry Teaching Evangelists Pastors Helping Exhortation Giving Ruling and governing Showing mercy Word of wisdom Word of knowledge Hospitality Faith Healing Miracles Discerning of spirits Tongues Interpretation of tongues The purpose of spiritual gifts is to serve God, help and edify others, and strengthen believers who collectively comprise the "body of Christ" (Rom. 12:11-13; I Cor. 12:25-26; Eph. 4:12-13; I Peter 1:12; I Peter 4:8-10). These gifts are a means for the exercising the greatest gift the love which never fails (I Cor. 13:1-13). |
"I WILL NOT LEAVE YOU COMFORTLESS: I WILL COME TO YOU YET A LITTLE WHILE,AND THE WORLD SEETH ME NO MORE; BUT YE SEE ME: BECAUSE I LIVE, YE SHALL LIVE ALSO. (Jn 14:17-18) |
HOW TO MAKE SURE YOU ARE SAVED Not everyone who claims to be saved, or even may believe him/herself to be saved really is saved. See Matthew 7:21-23, for what Jesus said. See also James 2:14,17; 2 Peter 1:8-11 You probably walked the aisle, made a public profession, got down on your knees and prayed, or had some public experience, when you first became a Christian. This is right, but in and of itself does not mean you actually had a conversion experience. You may even be busy with a lot of religious or church activity, but that in and of itself does not give salvation, either. Or you got baptised, again not assuring your salvation. See 2 Corinthians 13:5-6; 1 John 5:12-13; John 20:31 Here are some steps to test yourself: Have you believed in Jesus Christ as God, Lord and Savior? John 3:36,5:24,20:31;1 John 2:25,3:23 Do you enjoy fellowship with the Father and the Son? 1 John 1:2-3; John 17:3 Are you sensitive to sin? 1 John 1:5-10 Do you obey God’s word? 1 John 2:3-6, 5:3 Do you reject the world? 1 John 2:15-17, 4:4, 5:4-5;John 17:14-16 Do you eagerly anticipate Christ’s return? 1 John 3:2-3; Philippians 3:20-21; Titus 2:13 Is there a decreasing pattern of sin in your life? 1 John 3:4-10; 2 Corinthians 13:5 Do you suffer rejection because of your faith in Jesus Christ? 1 John 3:13; 2 Timothy 3:12 Do you love other believers? 1 John 3:10-14,17,19; John 13:35; 1 Peter 1:22, 4:8 Are your prayers answered? 1 John 3:22, 5:14-15 Are you able to discern between truth and error? 1 John 2:27, 5:10; Galations 4:6 See also 1 John 5:18-20. Do you know that you are in the beloved? Have you put your faith and your trust in Jesus? Have you ceased from any type of work or any type of merit, anything on your own that you can do to earn salvation, and simply rested in the fact that Jesus paid it all? When He was on the cross, His last words were, “it is finished” (John 19:30). The work that saves is finished, and you can rest in that today and know that you are a true believer in Jesus Christ. You can do that today, and then put your faith and trust in Him. If you have any doubts about your salvation, you can pray sincerely and from your heart. “Father, I thank you that Jesus died for me. I confess that I have broken Your laws. Please forgive my sins. I receive the pardon right now. I need the Lord Jesus to come into my life, and give me a new heart with new desires. By Your Spirit, please give me the power to live a life that is pleasing to You. Thank you for forgiving me as You promised; thank You for the gift of eternal life. In Jesus’name, AMEN.” If you are already a backslidden Christian, or unsure of your salvation, just substitute “please stay in my life” for “come into”. There is a prayer, the SINNER’S PRAYER, that is a little longer, but it is good for anyone who sincerely desires to ask Jesus Christ into his or her heart and life: “Have mercy upon me, Oh God, according to your lovingkindness: according unto the multitude of your tender mercies blot out my transgressions. Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin. For I acknowledge my transgressions: and my sin is ever before me. Against you, you only, have I sinned, and done this evil in your sight: that you might be justified when you speak, and be clear when you judge. Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, and in sin did my mother conceive me. Behold, you desire truth in the inward parts: and in the hidden part you shall make me to know wisdom. Purge me and I shall be clean: wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow. Make me to hear joy and gladness; that the bones which you have broken may rejoice. Hide your face from my sins, and blot out all my iniquities. Create in me a clean heart, Oh, God; and renew a right spirit within me. Cast me not away from your presence; and take not your holy spirit from me. Restore unto me the joy of your salvation; and uphold me with your free spirit. Then I will teach transgressors your ways; and sinners will be converted unto you. (This tells a little about what a saved, born-again Christian is going to do, the great commission to go out and preach the gospel to others.) Deliver me from guiltiness, Oh God, you God of my salvation: and my tongue shall sing aloud of your righteousness. Oh Lord, open my lips; and my mouth shall show forth your praise. For you desire not sacrifice; or else I would give it; you delight not in burnt offering. The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, Oh God, you will not despise. Then shall you be pleased with the sacrifices of righteousness.” Please, Lord, forgive me of my sins, come live in my heart, and accept me into your eternal kingdom, never to be separated from You again, from this day forward. I give myself to you, and I thank you, God, in Jesus’ name, AMEN. For a copy of most of what you just read, see Psalms 51.Welcome to the family of God. Remember, even though He paid it all, now you are to walk in God's HOLY SPIRIT, and read the Bible, and pray. Your love for the LORD makes Jesus number one in your life, and so you have a desire to obey, and are (esp. these days) LOOKING UP, for the glorious return of JESUS CHRIST. |
