In my previous letter of "Sophan Sophiaan's Deathly Hollow at Ngawi" written in the morning of 20 May 2008, I wrote about Sophiaan's fame came after playing in the movie "Pengantin Remaja" that was inspired by Hollywood's 1970 movie "Love Story" starred by Ali MacGraw and Ryan O'Neal.

It was followed by two other distinguished Indonesian died in the afternoon of 20 May 2008, at around 6.30 PM Singapore time the former Jakarta governor Ali Sadikin died, and at around the same time a freedom fighter and a wife of a historical journalist SK Trimurti died in Jakarta.

Surastri Karma Trimurti, born on May 11, 1912, was one of the country's remaining freedom fighters, died of an illness at Gatot Subroto Army Hospital in Central Jakarta at the age of 96. She was also famous for she was the wife of Sayuti Melik, a journalist who wrote the script of Proclamation text for Indonesian independence in 1945.

Her middle name Karma was like to remind me about my consent to move to the eternity through a car accident.

Ali Sadikin, born on July 7, 1927, was a famous governor of Jakarta from 1966 to 1977. He was appointed as a governor when he was a lieutenant general of Marine corps and only 39 years old, by Indonesian first president Soekarno.

Bang Ali, that was how he usually called, successfully coordinated many development projects in Jakarta such as Art Center and Academy at Taman Ismail Marzuki in the central Jakarta, on the land previously belong to the zoo. Then the zoo was moved to a more wider land in South Jakarta, the Ragunan Zoo. He also developed huge shopping area Proyek Senen in central Jakarta, some kind of Disney Land called Taman Impian Jaya Ancol in the bay area North of Jakarta, and other successful development projects.

The controversy about him came after he provided the permits for nightclubs, and also allowing gambling to operate in Jakarta, from the Pin-Ball machines, greyhound race, horse race, to Casinos. Although his subterfuge was to use the tax money from gambling to develop Jakarta.

Following the death of a famous former Jakarta governor Ali Sadikin, who died after my writing the previous letter of "Sophan Sophiaan's Deathly Hollow at Ngawi" about Sophiaan's fame came after playing in the movie "Pengantin Remaja" that was inspired by Hollywood's 1970 movie "Love Story" starred by Ali MacGraw and Ryan O'Neal, I need to write more about this "Love Story" legend. Especially since there could be some young people who also read this, who born after 1970, therefore never knew about the legend of "Love Story" novel and movie.

Besides, in Indonesia the name Ali usually is a man's name, so if I made no further explanation here, there could be some questions about what did I meant of Hollywood's 1970 movie "Love Story" starred by Ali MacGraw and Ryan O'Neal, was that some kind of gay movie or what.

"Love Story" was a novel written by Erich Segal and became a successful novel and movie in early seventies. Erich Wolf Segal who was born in June 16, 1937 in Brooklyn, New York, is an American author, screenwriter, and educator. He attended Harvard College, graduating as both the class poet and Latin salutatorian in 1958, after which he obtained his master's degree (in 1959) and a doctorate (in 1965) from Harvard University.

Segal was a professor of Greek and Latin literature at Harvard University, Yale University and Princeton University. He is now teaching at Wolfson College, Oxford.

In the late 1960s, Segal collaborated on other screenplays, and also had written a synthetic romantic story by himself about a Harvard and a Radcliffe student, but failed to sell it. However, literary agent Lois Wallace at the William Morris Agency suggested he turn the script into a novel and the result was a literary and motion picture phenomenon called "Love Story", a New York Times No. 1 bestseller, the book that became the top selling work of fiction for all of 1970 in the United States, and was translated into 33 languages worldwide. The motion picture of the same name, Love Story, was the number one box office attraction of 1971.

Erich Segal went on to write more novels and screenplays, including the 1977 sequel to Love Story, called Oliver's Story. ( source : wikipedia.org )

Subject:  Two More British Man Died in Indonesia

The body of Glenn Southall was being brought by a ambulance to the central hospital of RSCM, Jakarta (left). His body was laid in the morgue of the hospital (center). Police identification team entering the apartment.

After the death of A British Man Falling From 21 Floor of Rasuna Apartment on 5 May 2008, Alexander Henry Smith, there were two other British men died recently in Indonesia.

Glenn Southall (53), was found dead at room 902, his own room, of Apartment Ascott, Kebon Kacang street, central Jakarta on 22 May 2008. He was working as an oil consultant for Total Industry. His name sounds like containing a message for me related with my consent to move-up to the eternity, whereas "Southall" sounds like "all of his kind should be at the South", or in a map South is in the bottom.

Another British man, Philip Pocklington (35), died after falling from a 35-meter-high  tower crane at Grand Kuta Apartment construction site in Bali on 27 May 2008.
