Lacock Abbey
Founded in
1232 as an abbey and converted to a country house in the sixteenth century,
Lacock Abbey reveals much about both of its historical uses. Its
cloisters and monastic rooms are still intact. The alterations made
to convert it to a family home minimally altered the floor plan of the
abbey. In the 19th century, it was the home of William Fox-Talbot,
a pioneer in photography. The first photograph ever taken with the
modern process involving film and developing was taken by Fox-Talbot, who
pointed an experimental camera at one of the abbey windows. Near
the house is a museum of photography, as well as the village of Lacock,
parts of which date to the 13th century.
