   Russian uses the Cyrillic alphabet, which has a few familiar letter shapes, such as á ÷ å ë í î ï ò ó ô and è.
These shapes however do not always represent the same sounds as in English.
   The letters â ÷ ä ç ú ë ì í î ð ó ô and æ represent roughly the same sound as English b v d g z k l m n p s and f.
Run the mouse over the list on the left for the sound of that Russian letters.
Most Russian letters are just a bigger version of the small letter, though some letters look rather different in handwritten form.
      VOWELS
Hard
á      a
ú       e
ó      ee
ï      o
õ      oo
Soft
ñ      ya
å      ye
é      ee
ê      yo
à      yoo

The letter ê represents the same kind of 'y' sound when it occurs after a vowel. Thus ïê = oy, áê = a-ee (like the word 'eye') and so on.
Consonants too can be soft, when followed by a soft vowel (eg ì in ìàâéôø = lyoo-beet') or by the 'soft sign' ø (eg )
