Sligo Rovers F.C.

Stuff that you can do without knowing.

SRFC - Sligo RoversDixie Dean, the legendary Everton and Sligo Rovers striker almost won a F.A.I. Cup medal with Rovers in 1939. After scoring sixty league goals with Everton, Rovers decided he was just the man to lead their attack and duly signed him. Rovers reached the final after beating Dundalk in the semis. Dixie put Rovers into the lead in the first half of the final only for Shelbourne's Tommy Smyth to score direct from a corner with only ten minutes left.
Shelbourne won the replay with a goal scored from a free kick by Willy 'Sacky' Glenn in the second minute. Eye witness reports say it was well offside, although Rovers fans won't be too surprised to learn that Wilfred Wallace refereed.
If anyone is still reading this then you'll be glad to see that the Rovers team on the first day in Dalymount was : Cranston, McDaid, Lievesley, Hay, Peachey, Burns, Began, O'Connor, Dean, Johnston and Monaghan. Graham replaced Burns in the replay.

SRFC - Sligo Rovers This will be filled with useless information in the near future, when I make it all up.

Former player feature.

SRFC - Sligo RoversFormer centre forward Ian Gilzean's time at Cheltenham came to an end when Drogheda United signed him to add weight (one presumes) to their attack. Gilly failed to impress at United Park, and was snapped up by St. Pats. He had the audacity to score a hat-trick on his debut for them against the mighty reds.
SRFC - Sligo RoversFormer club captain Gavin Dykes is playing particularly well under Felix Healy at Derry and won his first Championship medal last season.
SRFC - Sligo RoversDeclan Boyle's sojourn with Celtic ended when Derry City brought him back to League of Ireland in February. He'd made captain of the reserves but Celtic reckoned he wouldn't make the first team. He has since lost his place at right-back to Eamonn Doherty whom Derry signed from Coleraine in the close season. Declan has recently signed for Finn Harps.
SRFC - Sligo RoversEddie Annand signed for Dundee from Clyde last season netting the Rovers a tidy sell-on sum. His strike partner at Clyde last season was none other than Charlie Nicholas. Since his move to Dundee he has kept up his scoring prowess, though I bet he doesn't get a Calor Gas cannister per goal anymore like Sligo were able to provide him with.
SRFC - Sligo RoversEx-keeper Mark 'Glider' McLean is custodian of the net with Clyde.
There's only one team called Rovers!Brendan Aspinall moved from the Sligo Showgrounds to the Coleraine ones helping them finish second behind Crusaders in the Irish league.
There's only one team called Rovers!Full-back Robbie Brunton joined Derry City after also spending year with Coleraine in the Irish League.
SRFC - Sligo RoversAndy Ramage, the last in the triumvirate to join Coleraine from Sligo, but he wasn't a success there where he was unable to make the first team. He later joined Derry and Finn Harps in quick succession, so much so that he was banned because he played with Finn Harps before his registration from Derry came through. He has recently joined Drogheda United.
SRFC - Sligo RoversColin Cameron (he of the hat-trick against Drogheda United which staved off relegation in the last game of the season some years back) plays for Hearts in the Scottish Premier Division. He is scoring regularly for the Edinburgh side. The 25 year old is said to be close to an international call-up froom Craig Brown.
