NTRA RELEASES SCHEDULE OF NHC QUALIFYING TOURNEYS IN 2009

The National Thoroughbred Racing Association (NTRA) and Daily Racing Form (DRF) have announced today the year-long schedule of qualifying events for the DRF/NTRA National Handicapping Championship (NHC) which carries an estimated total purse of $1 million.

The schedule (subject to changes and additions) is comprised of 101 events hosted at 42 different racetracks, off-track wagering facilities, Websites and casinos. Competitions are scheduled to take place now through late December. A full list of NHC qualifying dates and venues can be viewed at www.ntra.com/nhctour. Approximately 300 NHC qualifyiing berths will be available via the qualifiers and the NHC Tour.

Highlighting the qualifying schedule are four NHC “Superqualifiers” to be held on July 4-5 (Red Rock Casino, $75,000 estimated purse, three NHC seats available), August 29 (Monmouth Park, $100,000 estimated purse, six NHC seats), November 6-7 (Breeders’ Cup Online Tourney, $100,000 estimated purse, six NHC seats) and December 26-27 (Del Mar Surfside, $125,000 estimated purse, six NHC seats). All four Superqualifiers will permit at least two entries per person and are restricted to NHC Tour members. Each Superqualifier features extra large purses and/or extra NHC qualifying seats.

Registrations for the 2009 NHC Tour, a year-long bonus series, are being accepted at www.ntra.com/nhctour. The registration fee is $125.

The NHC Tour offers additional prize money and qualifying berths to the DRF/NTRA National Handicapping Championship (NHC). The NHC Tour is open only to officially registered contestants and results are based on performances at NHC qualifying events throughout the year. During the 2009 NHC qualifying year, there are also five free, online tournaments restricted to NHC Tour members, including a special “maiden” event on December 19 for non-NHC qualifiers in 2009. The first free NHC Tour tourney took place on February 28. The others will take place surrounding the Kentucky Oaks and Kentucky Derby (May 1-2), the Travers Stakes (Aug. 29) and the Thanksgiving weekend stakes action (Nov. 27-28).

At the end of the year’s qualifying events, the overall NHC Tour point leader will receive a bonus of $100,000. Should the overall NHC Tour winner go on to capture first place in the January 2010 NHC finals (NHC XI), he or she will receive a $2 million bonus.

“The 2008 NHC Tour year attracted more than 900 participants, and this year we hope to attract at least 1,000,” said Keith Chamblin, senior vice president for the NTRA. “We’ve made several improvements based on feedback from our players, and we believe the Tour’s new format will do an even better job of rewarding our top finishers.”

VELAZQUEZ TO RECEIVE SANTA ANITA’S WOOLF AWARD SUNDAY

J
ohn Velazquez, winner of the 2009 Santa Anita George Woolf Memorial Jockey Award, will receive the prestigious honor at Santa Anita this Sunday.

In a ceremony between races in the Santa Anita winner’s circle, Velazquez will formally receive the Woolf Trophy and be joined by many former winners of the award, which was instituted by Santa Anita in 1950. By a vote of his peers nationwide, Velazquez was selected over four other finalists: Gary Baze, Calvin Borel, Javier Castellano and David Flores.

The winner’s trophy is a replica of the full-size statue of George Woolf which adorns Santa Anita’s Paddock Gardens area. The statue was created through donations from the racing public after Woolf’s death following a spill at Santa Anita on Jan. 13, 1946.

Woolf, who was regarded as one of the greatest big-money riders of his era, was affectionately known as “The Iceman” in reference to his cool under pressure, and was revered by his colleagues as a fierce competitor and consummate professional. The award, which honors and recognizes riders whose careers and personal character earn esteem for the individual and the sport of Thoroughbred racing, is regarded as one of the most prestigious honors in the racing world.
Welcome to the Pub's Horse Racing section.  Your pubmaster has been in and around this game for nearly 40 years.  As a young patron on Saturday afternoons at Mommouth Park, to a valet at MPJC all through college, to the GM of two of Philadelphia's successful OTB's in the 90's, and finally as a television host of The Racing Channel, The Racing Network, At the Races, and PhoneBet TV to name a few.  Please feel free to visit the site of an old colleague  at HorsePlayerPro.com

For those new to this clubhouse, you can expect a lot of info on upcoming races, and a nice section we are looking forward to pass along, "This Day in American Racing History".  Most of the stuff will come courtesy of the NTRA, but you never know who will also provide commentary.  Thanks for stopping in, and best of luck with the ponies!
Gets top billing because it pays the bills.  An improving racing site and a good place to find out how to get the real deal.

THE official venue for all statistical information for the sport.  Results, entries, carryovers, whatever you need is all right here.

Widely recongnized at the bible of thoroughbred racing.  Great writers, editorials, and lots of upcoming race  information.

Th
e NTRA is a well organized site for news and statistical information.  Is the official site for the sport.

Brisnet has great stats on the sport, and even provides  great number crunching by track, breeding, and a whole lot more.

Another great site.  Is kind of a mesh between the
DRF and T-Times.  Excellent search engine can help with any racing inquiry.

A great overall picture of the sport.  Breaks down the racing picture in various catagories and is usually first to air the story.

Breeders' Cup Official Site.  America's biggest day in racing.                      The Eclipse Award site.  The best of the best.

Harness Site.  Similar to T-Times in punctuality of the news and nicely organized.

A perfect trip among the field of 12 in the Preakness for Kent Desourmeax once again.  At the top of the stretch for the 2nd race in a row, Big Brown put the hammer down and drew away for an easy cantoring victory...

Three weeks later, Da'Tara pulls off the upset victory in New York.  The big story of course was Big Brown's dismal effort, being pulled up in shame at the top of the long Belmont stretch, and Dutrow's classless behaviour afterwards.
