Championship Weekend

Baltimore at Pittsburgh:  The Ravens dogged a bullet last week in Tennessee, but I think their luck has run out.  Offensively I don't see them running the ball on the
Steeler defense, and they won't put Flacco into too many obvious passing situations.  That being said, the Steelers haven't looked better than they do now.  They are
finally healthy offensively, with Roeslithberger making great decisions and even more accurate throws.  There is only so much you can expect from a great defense that has played 17 consecutive games in a row, and the third road playoff game as well...
Steelers 24  -  Ravens 13.

Philadelphia at Arizona:  The Eagles matched up well with these same Cardinals on Thanksgiving night, and still do.  Anytime you can match a team's strength with
yours neutralizes both elements, and that is what you get with the Eagle secondary against Arizona's wide outs.  I mentioned last week that I didn't expect the improved play/speed of Edgerrin James.  The newest head scratcher is where in the hell did that defense come from?  Sure, a billion turnovers last week in Carolina after a pretty decent home win vs. the Falcons.  Are these guys for real?  If they are, they may be good enough to make that first Super Bowl journey.  If not, you can
book the Keystone State ticket now...
Eagles 34  -  Cardinals 28.

Arizona at Carolina:
Last week I was impressed by a couple of things in the desert.  One, Edgerin James looked spry.  For the past  couple of seasons he appeared as if he'd lost a step, and became a plodding running back who could carry 30 times for about 100  yards.  On Saturday, he showed a glimpse of some breakaway ability, and that was the key to the Cardinals home win.  These two met  up in week 8, and although Arizona lost 27-24 they played the Panthers about as tough as home as anyone this season.  That being  said, I see big things for Jake Delhomme and Steve Smith Saturday.  Look for the Panther defense to smother James and the Arizona  running game, then slowy force Warner into making mistakes.  At this time, I'd also like to officially start the rumor that the New York  Jets are looking to pick up Matt Leinart.  Anyone smart enough to have photos of himself in a hot tub with underaged hotties and a  giant beer bong is good enough to carry my boys into the 2009 campaign...
Panthers 35  -  Cardinals 17.

Philadelphia at Giants:
I don't think this game will be nearly as close as my Philadelphia friends seem to think.  Sure, the Eagles did  beat NY a couple of weeks back, but the Giants have made the Post-Plax adjustments needed, and have the advantage of the bye  week to get healthy.  I'll give Westbrook his 4 yard screen turned into a 62-yeard TD prop.  You know that is coming.  However, I think  the Giants running attack is the difference here, with Brandon Jacobs playing smashmouth football inside, and Bradshaw and Ward  chipping at the corners.  Eli Manning will take advantage and blow this one open in the 2nd half...
Giants 31  -  Eagles 20.

San Diego at Pittsburgh:

If there is a team peeking at the right time, I think the Chargers are as good a selection as any.  Five wins in  a row, including back to back playoff or playoff type wins.  Every player on that team knows how they were portrayed during the regular  season as underachievers, but the defense has manned up and now makes them very dangerous.  These two met during week 11 to  a 11-10 Steeler victory.  Pitt will certainly play exceptional defense and will need to vs. an exceptional offense.  I like the Chargers to  win straight up.  Sproles will break a long one late and Big Ben will force a throw in a counter attack to send the Chargers to the Music  City...
Chargers 21  -  Steelers 17.

Wild Card Weekend
Atlanta at Arizona:  The Cardinals made the playoffs simply due to the fact that they've played Seattle, San Francisco, and St. Louis all  twice.  They don't run the ball well and their defense doesn't scare anyone.  What they do have is a terrific set of receivers and a  veteran quarterback.  The upstart Falcons have played very consistant football all season, with the majority of their success directly  attributable to Michael Turner.  I like ball control offense in the playoffs, and I think Arizona is going to lose the time of possession  battle big time Saturday, and their first playoff game since the Johnson Administration...
Falcons 28  -  Cardinals 24.
Final Score:  Cardinals 30 - Falcons 24.

Indianapolis at San Diego:  Two teams that know each other very well, considering they play in different divisions and the toughest  match up during Wild Card Weekend.  The Colts have been quietly surging under the radar since October; I believe 9-0 during that  span.  My initial reaction to the Chargers stems from their lackluster play for most of the season and terrible defense.  Antonio Gates  and LT may not play or see limited action.  You know what, I like the Chargers.  Couple of reasons for this pick.  They play the Colts  tough in big games.  They have won four straight and could finally be peeking at the right time.  I like Darren Sproles a lot, and think  that right now he gives San Diego more explosion in the backfield that Tomlinson.  There, I said it.  Bench the star and play the hot  hand...
Chargers 27  -  Colts 24.
Final Score:  Chargers 23 - Colts 17.

Baltimore at Miami:  Okay I'll say it, as a Jets fan I was actually happy to see the Dolphins win last week to knock the Patriots out of the  playoffs.  Good for them, good for Chad.  Now that that is said, I think Miami is one and done this week.  The Ravens defense should  neutralize an average at best Miami offense.  They have an excellent secondary and are still probably the best run stuffing defense in  the NFL.  Their offense benefits from the excellent field position the D provides, so they don't need as much as other teams.  Flacco's  strong arm is good enough to keep the Miami defense from crowding their receivers.  All and all, the Dolphins had a nice run but aren't  in the same class as Baltimore...
Ravens 23  -  Dolphins 13.
Final Score:  Ravens 27 - Dolphins 9.

Philadelphia at Minnesota:  The Eagles have momentum and seemingly match up well against the Vikings offense.  I don't think  Tarvais Jackson is going to have any time, nor any luck against Philadelphia's defense.  The secondary should be able to isolate  against very average receivers, leaving the rest of the crew to take care of Adrian Peterson.  McNabb has been very sharp since his  benching, and if he can get Westbrook enough touches I see no reason why the Birds can't book the charter up to the Meadowlands  next week...
Eagles 27  -  Vikings 17.
Final Score:  Eagles 26 - Vikes 14.

A recap of last week's disaster ...
Not too often anyone goes 0-4 in making NFL predictions, but that was exactly what happened to yours truly last weekend.  Can any of that hardship lead to correct picks this week?

In Saturday's first loss, Tennessee was the pick.  For most of the afternoon in Memphis, the Titans moved the ball and played solid defense.  Tennessee's strength all season long however, was missing on Saturday.  They compiled one of the NFL's best marks this season with solid, smart play.  Too many penalties and turnovers in the red-zone was too much to overcome against the staunch Baltimore defense.  Nine times out of ten I'd still go with Tennessee in that spot.

Nobody on planet earth could have predicted Jake Delhommes horrific play on Saturday night.  Under no circumstances do pro teams win games with that many turnovers.  Were the Cardinals just lucky, or did their defense create the mayhem?  That story may play out on Sunday.

The Eagles certainly proved themselves win another solid win over the defending Super Bowl champs.  McNabb was very sharp and a much superior passer in the windy conditions than his counterpart.  Speaking of Eli, I'm still amazed at how many Giant fans dislike this guy.  You'd think he plays in Philadelphia, one bad game and he can't play anymore.  Where have I heard that?  At any rate, to me the Giants never recovered from the loss of Plaxico Burress.  No TD's to the wideouts after he shot his dumb ass in the leg.  That freed up at least one d-back to crowd the line, and in the end if the Giants couldn't run the football, they were a shell of themselves.

The last game of the weekend was another terrific ballgame in Pittsburgh.  I went a bit out on a limb with my San Diego pick, but to me they had everything going for them at the right time.  Early on it looked like the smart play, but as things often go in the playoffs, these games have a tendency to get away from teams who have to play catch up in the 2nd half.  That late game momentum for Pittsburgh could be the flame that delivers the Lombardi Trophy back to the Steel City.
