Bowden Cave Trip
       01/20/01
Here's some pics from one of my favorite caving adventures.  This trip turned out to be a little more than we bargained for.  We wound up colder and wetter than a trip to Harlansburg!  Unfortunately, the cave was quite foggy on this day, so the pics didn't come out very clear or crisp.  You'll get the idea, though...
Here's Shawn hanging upside- down.  Why?  He wanted a pic to show his wife to make her think that the "Hairy Traverse" was hairier than it really was!
Here's where things got fun..   This crawl is through the bedding plane.  On this day, it felt more like "the agony," as it had some pools of water that were VERY cold.  Belly crawls through cold water are a good way to weed out the men from the boys! ;-)
This pic shows the deepest level of insanity that we experienced that day...  This is me coming out of the "Water Course".    On this day, the water was a crisp 35-38 degrees, thigh deep, and moving VERY fast.  Within the first 30 seconds in the water, we couldn't feel anything from the knees down.  During the 10 minutes or so it took to go through here, things got real interesting.   This was probably the most concerned for my well being that I've ever been in a cave.  My mind started racing about 3/4 of the way though that we needed to get out of that water FAST!
Another interesting feature to the Water Course is the "pot holes".  These holes can be 2 feet deep, and going down into one in water that fast can be really bad...   meaning you might not get up again.  Since the water was so deep, we couldn't see them, so we had to be very slow and deliberate with our footing, which added to our time in the cold water.
