(2/02) Gene is a 9.5 yr old Philipino/Euro-Caucasian boy with all vaccines up to date. Weighs about 60lbs, ht about 4 ft 3in. At an exam 6mos ago, his BP was 106/68, pulse: 88. At the time of the testing, he was on no meds only vitamins (Hero Nutrit. Yummy Bears (Multi & Focus+)) and no special diet but he had self-limited to not take in any nuts (has always been highly allergic to certain nuts), cheese, milk (except chocolate milk), eggs. He has always had a craving for salt and loves "jelly bread" (& other bread products - biscuits, rolls...) & green apple peel. For reference, he was considered "low birth weight" (5lb10oz) but seemed to gain weight quickly (nursed until 8 mos). Seemed to hit all developmental milestones early on except speech (never progressed past babbling until at 5 yrs, spoke his 1st words (after AIT and followed by extensive 1 on 1 speech therapy)). He is asthmatic; however he rarely has attacks now; they were much more common when he was younger. He did have many ear infections between ages 1.5-2.5yrs and had a very bad asthmatic reaction to the varivax vaccine. He was diagnosed by BJ Freeman, UCLA, at about 3 yrs; she felt that he was very intelligent, but due to the autistic behaviors and inability to speak, she had a hard time completing some of the tests.. Currently, he speaks a lot, good vocabulary, but speech is a bit sing-songy and frequently "inappropriate." Frequently, he makes odd sounds. Likes a lot of structure (ie schedules, still likes to line things up, etc.). Becomes compulsive/obsessive about certain things. Can be highly emotional but can "turn on, turn off" emotions very easily. Sleeps very well (regularly down about 8pm, up about 6am). Seems to be sensory-deprived; does a lot of jumping, climbing, likes hugs, massage, etc. Has the "sideways glance" as well as a behavior when he cups his hand beside his mouth and pinches that side of his mouth closed and speaks out of the other side of his mouth. He frequently has rigidity of joints. His social skills are improving, but still lacking. He is in Spec Ed 4th grade, but overall is probably developmentally between 1st/2nd grade. 2/02: Along with the Doctor's Data Inc Hair Elements test, we also ran several tests at approximately the same time: Great Smokies Microbiology and Yeast Sensitivity Panel and Immuno Labs Immuno 1 Bloodprint IgG Standard Food Sensitivity Assay, Gliadin Gluten Antibody Assay and Sub-Fractions (Egg and Milk) Assay. We also tested for abnormal levels of Zinc/Copper (to look for defective functioning of metallothionein protein (MT) through Quest Labs; this has been shown to be very prevalent in autistic kids by Dr. William Walsh of the Pfeiffer Treatment Center - reference: Metal-Metabolism and Autism). This seemed to be fine. All test results are copied below. 8/02: We took Gene to the Pfeiffer Treatment Center Outreach Clinic for a huge battery of testing. In 9/02, we received the results which only the indicated "abnormal" results are shown below (there were pages and pages of numbers, so that is why not everything is shown here) 11/12/02: Gene had a few tests done at the same time: retesting Metals Test w/ DDI as the GSDL/Pfeiffer one showed an unusually high copper; a GSDL Amino Acid Plasma Test for Cysteine, Taurine, Glycine...; ImmunoLabs Food Sensitivities Retest - it has been 1 year of Gene being on his special diet wanted to see if there were any changes. 6/11/03: I like to do the ATEC test/scoring from time to time to see areas of improvement as well as areas that need work. |
March 5, 2002: We have run the Great Smokies Microbiology & Yeast Sensitivity Panel again. Hopefully it will come up clean so that Gene's DAN! doctor will feel comfortable with Gene beginning the chelation program. airborne 8526963966 has been received...should hear back by Mon March 18. March 18, 2002: Bad News! I met with Gene's DAN! doctor and unfortunately the tests results were very similar to before -- still a lot of yeast and still lack of good bacteria. We are going to try Sporanox for another 2 wks, E Coli treatment for 3 wks, give him his probiotic in the AM / enzyme in PM, and I am going to add the garlic on a regular basis and try the GSE and Primal Defense. We will test again in a month or so...it will be very surprising if that yeast can survive the Sporanox, garlic, PD and GSE(!) although we knew that it was a difficult strain that we are treating. April 15, 2002: We ran the GS M & YS Panel again. airborne 8664308763 was received Wed 4/17 AM...should hear back by Wed, April 24.. April 27, 2002: Well, I won't say Bad News again, but I was hoping for better. I got together with Gene's doctor to review the results of the latest GSDL test. Good News is that the yeast overgrowth has gone down - from 4+ to 2+. Bad News is that a new bad bacteria has cropped up. Unfortunately the lab either misplaced or didn't run the sensitivity portion, so we don't have the list of suggested remediations for the overgrowth yeast/bacteria. We will rerun the test so that we can get the details, but we felt comfortable enough to move forward with the chelation (after another run of Sportanox). May 9, 2002: I finally got the stool sample so it is going out tomorrow: airborne 1982437041. May 20, 2002: Heard back from doc. re: latest microbio. test. Candida was up a bit, but Sporanox should hopefully be handling that. Bifidobacterium was low, but the Lactobacillus was up into the green for the first time. The E Coli was OK too for the first time too. The new "bad" bacteria that showed up last time was gone this time. All in all, this was good news----- September 5, 2002: Met w/ the doc. re: latest micro test. As always sortof mixed news; Lacto & Bifido are both no growth again, but the E coli is still up in the green. A couple of imbalanced flora and one possible pathogen that doesn't seem to concern the doc. much. The excellent news is that for the first time the candida is normal (hooray!!) |

Pfeiffer Treatment Center (8/02): |
Procedure: Kryptopyrrole: Result: 31.25 (High) Expected Range: 0-20 mcg/dl Optimal Range: 0-10 mcg/dl |
Procedure: Histamine Determination, Blood: Result: 134 ng/mL (High) Expected Range: 20-200 ng/mL Optimal Range: 40-70 ng/mL |
Explanation: Histadelia (Undermethylation) Histamine is a brain neurotransmitter, which has a major influence on human behavior. Histadelia involves a genetic tendency to overproduce and overstore histamine in blood basophils and brain neurons. This condition is associated with a deficiency of methyl groups in the body (undermethylation) resulting in low levels of serotonin, dopamine and other neurotransmitters that require methyl groups in their formation. With marked elevation, there is a tendency to OCD, perfectionism, high-energy drive, and competitiveness. Children can be "control" persons and have difficulty with authority figures. May have poor socialization with peers and prefer the company of younger children or adults. Physical discipline usually causes a worsening of behavior. Because of their high energy level, they are prone to depression, due to low serotonin levels. Undermethylated person have a gentic tendency to be very depressed in calcium, magnesium, methionine, and B6 with excessive levels of folic acid. Nutrient therapy includes methionine (a methyl donor), calcium and magnesium (to stimulate release of histamine from tissues), and B6 (which enhances serotonin production). Additionally Vit A, C & D. 5HTP, the amino acid prcursor of serotonin or SAMe, a more potent conversion product of methionine, as well as compatible herbs: St. John's Wort, which increases serotonin, Kava Kava, and Inositol. Avoid folic acid, niacinamide, histidine. An interesting link re: Histamine |
Sometimes we don't realize the progress our kids are making since we see them day in and day out. I was looking at my Gene's school pix over the past 2 yrs and there is a real difference in his eye contact and facial expressions, and he just looks healthier to me too. |
