Marriage Notes for WILLIAM CAIRNS and
MARGARET MCKELLAR:
This couple, as well as many of the Cairns and Andrews
Families, were married in the stone church of St. Andrews
at Eversley. It is part of the east half of Lot 9, Concession
3 of King township. In 1843 the property was purchased
from Joseph Wells for 5 pounds. a log schoolhouse, which
also served as a church was built. the present church,
which was built circa 1848, is the oldest stone church
in King Township. This Presbyterian cemetery was established
circa 1834 and closed in 1958.Tthe Reverend John tawse
preached here from 1834 to 1860. He is buried in this
cemetery. He was succeeded by Dr. James Carmichael, who
remained pastor from 1860 to 1910. the charge of Strange
was also tended by Dr. Carmichael. In 1960 Lady Flora
McCrea Eaton from Eaton Hall Farm, purchased the church
and property and placed the church in the custody of the
York Pioneer and Historical Society. the McKellars are
buried in the cemetery beside the church.
