| Fishing on Lake Nipissing - Fishing Tips Equipment recommendations |

| The first thing that you have to ask yourself is what are your expectations when you go fishing? Are you going after the big ones, be they pike, bass, or walleye? If so, are you properly equipped for such an endeavor? I cannot tell you how many times I have seen fishermen with unsuitable equipment head out to catch pike or muskie. Let's face facts, a Zebco 33 reel on a 5'5" rod with 8 pound line is not the best gear to use for big pike and muskie. More often than not some part of the equipment is going to fail if and when you hook into a big fish. You should also make sure that you have the right selection of lures and tackle for whatever sort of fishing that you prefer. Many of the shallow bays near the lodge are weedy so you will want to bring along lures that are weedless or shallow-diving so that you are not constantly snagging weeds. Consider using steel leader with your lures as pike and muskie have sharp teeth and can easily cut the strongest fishing line. I have seen pike cut through 20 pound Spectra line with their teeth. If you use jigs, then you may want to consider attaching the jig to your line with a snap swivel. This will help to reduce the chances that pike or muskie will cut through your line. In summary: 1. Use a steel leader or swivel when appropriate. 2. Use stronger, abrasion resistant line for pike, muskie, or bass. 14 pound and up is preferred. 3. Size the rod and reel for the job. A 6'6" to 7' 6" medium to heavy rod for pike & muskie. 4. Make sure your equipment is in good working order. Lube the reel. Check the fishing line. 5. If possible, bring a spare rod and reel. 6. Have the right lure at hand. Weedless lures and shallow divers are good in the bays. Other recommended gear:- - Trolling motor is very useful. A drift anchor is good too. - Diagonal cutters & good pliers are essential for Catch & Release. - A fish finder is useful for finding structure in deeper water. |
