| Water depth The sheltered waters of the southern arm of Lake Nipissing typically vary in depth from 5 feet to 15 feet. The two most notable areas are Fish Bay and Hunters bay. Hunters Bay varies from 9 feet to 15 feet deep and runs the gamut from vast weedbeds to rocky shoals. There are plenty of opportunites for catching most species of fish in these waters. The muskie and pike will most often be found in the weed beds, while the smallmouth bass will be found along the edges of the rocky shoals nearest to deeper (10+ feet) waters. Fish Bay is a large flat bay that is 5 - 6 feet deep in most areas and comprises a variety of weedbeds and patches of reeds or lily pads along its shorelines. Many types of lures and presentations will need to be chosen with this in mind. A general observation regarding the Bays would be that I catch greater numbers of fish in Fish Bay, while I catch bigger fish in Hunter's Bay. I should also mention that fishing in Fish Bay is a grab bag of sorts. You really don't know what you will catch from cast to cast. Pike, bluegill, bass and walleye are all there even during the heat of the summer.. Hunter's Bay, on the other hand, allows you to target your fishing for the species that you wish to catch. There is much better defined structure in this bay. There are rock piles and shoals for small mouth bass, deeper weedbeds of cabbage weed for pike and muskie, and deep points and flats for walleye.
