Recently we have heard Rahab being bad-mouthed as a no-good prostitute, by some that obviously have never read the true story about the courageous Rahab. For because of her, the city of Jericho was conquered, and because of her the march into the promise land was successfully started. So read it for yourself and you certainly should be honoring her for her faith rather than mocking her for her profession. http://www.blueletterbible.org/kjv/Jos/Jos002.html#1 Obviously Rahab was supporting her whole family with prostitution, and it was and is a legitimate means of making a livelihood and was never forbidden in the Bible. It is a dangerous occupation, but women and men in it, can hardly be blamed for using what the Lord gave them to help others. SEE Is prostitution wrong. We all have to work in the flesh to keep our spirits going, so let's not self righteously blame Rahab. She took in the Hebrew spies when the King of Jericho was told about them. She risked her life in protecting them, and then hiding them on her roof. She risked everything in lying about their whereabouts when she knew exactly where they were. So why did she do this. Well, it states specifically that she believed that the Hebrews would take over, and believed in their God. In other words, she had FAITH, and her Faith in the Lord and His people is what saved her and them. She risked all to help them win the battle, and then afterwards when victory was secured because of what the spies reported back to Joshua. They in return saved the whole household of Rahab. Her Faith saved all her household, irregardless of her profession, as the heart is what matters to the Lord and not merely what we do with our bodies to make ends meet. Rahab, surely had had talked to her customers about the Children of Israel that were encamped in the wilderness for 40 years, and developed a faith in them even before they approached Jericho and its walls. Rahab was knowledgeable and not just a dumb flousy, or a mere whore. She had fiber and intelligence and courage, and this is why the Lord used her to help His people. So rather than demeaning Rahab, and Mary Magdalene the oft mentioned prostitute of the New Testament, we should rather be honoring them for their great FAITH and courage. They should be set as ideals alongside all the other great women of the Bible. For just as Esther used her God given beauty, Rahab did the same. No difference, for their hearts were right !! and with this, they saved their people. God bless Rahab !! David and Trixie |
