St. Johns Lane, Canterbury

Tel 00 44 (0)1227456425

Update!! Five rooms are still available! This guest house is right bang in the centre of town, very clean, very friendly and comfortable and has ample parking. There are 3-4 bathrooms to share between the 9 rooms and it has a strictly no smoking policy.

Travel Inn (out of town, rooms ~  45 pounds (70 Euros)/night)

Thanet Way, Whitstable

Tel. 00 44 (0)8701977269

www.travelinn.co.uk

This is a travel inn so it is clean, comfortable, cheap but a bit bland and badly situated if you do not have a car. On the other hand it is very practical for people not drinking and coming by car, since it is situated 2 minutes from the motorway exit and 5 minutes drive from the party at the farm.

Tudor House (in town, double en suite 50 pounds/night, standard 45 pounds/night, family 52 pounds per night)

*Highly recommended*

6, Best Lane Canterbury

00 44 (0)1227 765650

This very pretty B&B backs out onto the river and is old and quaint. No more rooms available.

8, Castle Street, Canterbury

00 44 (0) 1227 456441

Rooms between 42 pounds and 65 pounds per night, guest house is in centre of town, this hostel is apparently half built into the Norman city walls of Canterbury and extremely clean. Again top recommendation from my mother.

Millers Arms (in town, rooms from 60 pounds (80 Euros) /night)

1, Mill Lane, Canterbury

Tel. 00 44 (0)1227 456057

This pub has always been my favourite pub in Canterbury. It is situated right beside the river in the quietest area of Canterbury city centre (Ironically this is also the area where Canterbury´s HOT night life is to be found). It is 5 minutes walk past the cathedral to the County Hotel if don´t have Timur´s sense of direction.

County Hotel

High Street, Canterbury

www.macdonaldshotels.co.uk

Situated bang in the centre of Canterbury, this is where the wedding ceremony will take place. The building is one of Canterbury´s most beautiful old buildings and was built 400 years ago as a town residence for a rich Canterbury family.

Directions if you´re driving

Ferry and tunnel prices are much cheaper if booked well in advance and the stay is less than 5 or even better 3 days.

The hotel (wedding service) is in the centre of Canterbury in the pedestrian zone.

The farm is 3 miles along the Whitstable road coming out of Canterbury (A290). You pass two pubs, (Hare & Hounds, the Royal Oak) and one Bird sanctuary and it is at the bottom of the hill after that. There are no signs whatsoever, but its right on a bend and probably there´ll be balloons or flashing tulips or something to indicate the presence of a party.

Directions if you´re flying over

Nearest airports are London Gatwick and London Stanstead.

If booked well in advance, cheap flights can be found on the following websites:

www.ryanair.com (Salzburg – London Stanstead, can be very very cheap… 15 Euros per head sometimes)

www.easyjet.com  (Munich – London Stanstead, expect to pay at least 35 Euros per head)

Or British Airways, Lufthansa and Air France do offers of 100 Euros per head if booked well in advance.

Both Gatwick and Stanstead have railway stations that will take you into the centre of London, here you will have to take the Tube to London Victoria in order to take the train to Canterbury, total journey time about 3 hours and expect to pay between 50 and 80 Euros for the return journey.

NEW!!! Alternatively a Canterbury-based airport taxi firm will pick you up and take you directly to your hotel, feel free to ask Timur or Charlotte whether other people are arriving at the same airport at the same time as you, since the larger the number of people, the cheaper the taxi per person. Taxis are booked per car and prices are as follows:

For up to 4 people:

Gatwick – Canterbury 50 pounds (70 Euros)

(contact Neville on

Stanstead Canterbury 60 pounds (80 Euros)

00 44 (0)1227 360240)

For up to 8 people:

Stanstead –Canterbury 90 pounds (120 Euros)

For up to 16 people:

Stanstead –Canterbury 140 pounds (190 Euros)

(contact ASM coaches

00 44 (0)1227 280254)

Feel free to ask Charlotte or Timur to book for you.

Directions if you´re coming by train

Ashford International Railway station is quite close to Canterbury. Ashford International is on the Eurostar Line before London. This makes travelling from Cologne (change in Brussels) or Grenoble (change in Paris) quite stress free. In principle you should be able to ask simply for a return to Ashford International in either train station. The ticket price is about 130 Euros return and the journey time is about 6 hours in total.

From Munich you can take an overnight sleeper to Paris and the Eurostar to Ashford arriving 10 am.

From Ashford you can reach Canterbury by bus or taxi (to book a taxi for 4 people from Ashford International, ask Charlotte or Timur to book for you or book directly yourself by phoning Neville on 00 44 (0)1227 360240, price 25 pounds (40 Euros), for more than 4 people contact ASM coaches on 00 44 (0) 1227 280254, price unknown).

Visas

Anyone not from the European union will need a visa to enter Britain. If you´re married to someone from the EU you can obtain one free from the British Embassy which allows to travel in UK so long as you are with your partner.

Money

Just as a reminder, the UK still pays for things in The Pound.

AOB

If anyone other than the usual Father, groom or best man plans to provide extra amusements, please let Charlotte, Timur, Charlotte´s parents (pete@kingfisherstar.com), or Timur´s brother, Achim know.  It is particularly recommended to include embarrassing moments out of the groom´s former life. The bride, on the other hand, will not speak to anyone ever again who cares to remind her of anything she´d rather forget.
