Ken Daneyko finally called it quits after a very successful hockey career. Daneyko was selected 18th overall in the 1982 draft by New Jersey, the franchise's first as the Devils. He played in the first 165 playoff games in franchise history - a streak that began in 1988 and was snapped when coach Pat Burns scratched him in Game Four of the Eastern Conference quarterfinals against Boston this past season. Daneyko has 36 goals,142 assists and 2519 penalty minutes in 1283 regular season games. Daneyko, fellow defensemen Scott Stevens and Scott Niedermayer, goaltender Martin Brodeur and center Sergei Brylin are the only members of all three of New Jersey's championship teams in 1995, 2000 and 2003. The tenure of Daneyko with the Devils and Yzerman with the Red Wings, dating to the 1983-84 season, is longer than that of any active athlete in the four major pro sports leagues. Daneyko won the Masterton Trophy in 2000 for perseverance and dedication to hockey. |
