After you have labeled all of you artifacts you may choose to keep a record of every artifact that came from each site. A computer database may help if you choose to do this. The advantages that you could see how many and what type of artifacts came from every site. I think this is a good idea, but it is not something I have done. Because of this I do not have any good ways to keep track of this type of information. If you wish to share your system please let me know and I will put it up here to share with others. As I mentioned earlier the other advantage to keeping all artifacts cataloged is that sometimes you can put broken pieces back together. Every year I go through every piece that I have found. I will try to put together any pieces that I can. I average about one to two projectile points a year this way. The most amazing one was a 3 inch Savannah River that I found the two halves over two years apart. One thing I will say here, and it may sound funny but I have seen it. If you need to use a grinder to get the two pieces to fit then they do not go together. I seen one guy that had a whole display with artifacts that were half red agate and half obsidian or half red agate and half white agate. I will say that it did make for a colorful display. |
