Use of replicas and fakes

By just putting one replica in your display brings down the authenticity of not just that one display, but everything you have.  If you were looking at a great display and found one of them to be a fake, would you wonder just how many of them were authentic.  Not just that one display you were looking at, but every display that the collector had?

Now any of you out there that are knappers don't get offended.  I have seen some great work by master knappers.  There is a time and a place for every work of art.  Yes, even the replicas are works of art.  But in the same setting as a authentic artifact is not the right place.

When would be a great time to use a display of replicas and not detract from your authentic artifacts?   One great use of replicas would be when my wife wanted a display to be put at her place of work.  The area she in has people around it all day long, and she is not always there.  There are also people there during the night.  I would never put together a display of authentic artifacts and put them in a place like this, so replicas would be ideal in this setting.

Other great uses would be when children want one for show and tell at school, Boy Scouts, and many other educational times when the use of a authentic is too risky.

I have heard people selling knapped replicas of artifacts saying "Use this beautiful knapped piece in your display until you can get an authentic one."   When you first hear this it sounds like a good idea.  After all it is a beautiful piece and it would catch any persons  attention.  All this sounds great until you really think about it.
