Factors for the size of a display

Other factors that play into the size of a display is what is being displayed.  Tools are generally bigger than points, therefore, a larger frame is needed to display them.  By the same token small bird points will require more artifacts.

Further on we will cover design and arrangement of artifacts.  Using design and arrangement you can use less artifact for large displays without having the display look bare.

One rule of thumb I like is to have twice the number of artifacts you will need for a display before starting a new display.  By having more than you need you will always be able to keep the display balanced and even.  If you do not have twice as many as you will need, you should have a minimum of 10 per 100 more than you need.  As you start you display these extras will help keep everything balanced and if you under judged the needed number of artifacts you will have the extras to complete the display.

When determining the size of the display you are going to create take the extras out before you figure the size of the display.

Now we have an idea of the size we are going to create, the next step is to determine the type of frame and display we are going to create.

The size of your display is a very important area of concern when creating a artifact display.  By adding too many artifact can create a busy display that the eye has no ability to process.  By having a busy display people will not be able to process your artifacts and will not be able to remember anything about your display.  It will catch the eye, but it is unlikely that people will talk about or remember it when talking about artifacts.  They will remember you have a collection, but that is about it.

On the flip side by having too few artifacts leaves the eye to wander the display.  People will leave with the impression that you have a very little collection and are just starting.

Many people have started a display with out enough artifacts to complete it.  I prefer not to start a display this way.  One reason is until the display is completed the display will look rough.  Also to create a great display the frame must be even and balanced.  By starting one before there is enough artifact will leave you in the position of collecting looking for a specific shape and size to keep the display balanced.  There are many beautiful ways to display your artifacts until you have enough to create a display, you can use smaller frames, larger designs that require fewer artifacts, or use a shelf to display them.  Starting a large display without enough artifacts can really drag it down and everything displayed around it.

The first thing you must do before you start an artifact display is determine what size of a display you are going to do.  The size of your display varies greatly on the number of artifact you have to display.  An example of this is a frame  18 X 24 will typically take 100 - 130 artifacts.  Depending on the design you choose the number may be more or less.  Below is a  table with frame sizes and an approximate number of artifacts that is needed for each.
