| Use of color in a display | ||||||||||||
| A touch of color in any display can help catch peoples eyes and focus them on your display. Most larger displays of this type have colors about the same. Most pots and bowls are varying shades of gray to red, and fiber artifacts are brown. When you have many of these artifacts together the colors and artifacts can blend together. Here are some tips of how to use color in larger displays. Single Artifact Displays - When you set up a single item display the use of color can really detract attention from the artifact. Use of color in these type of displays should be reserved for black. Black is a great color to place the artifact on and place behind the artifact. This will bring out the artifact without attracting attention. The use of black also is a great background for a single artifact display when you are using light to highlight the artifact (see lighting section). If you want to use color for the display then brightly colored artifacts can be placed around the base of the artifact. This will bring a more natural look and not detract from the artifact itself. When using other colorful artifacts to highlight your display be sure not to use fakes or replicas (see use of replicas and fakes section). Multiple Artifact Displays - Color used in a multiple artifact display can be a great asset to your display. Color should be added within the artifacts and not the background itself. Black is a great background. It absorbs light and does not reflect the light making the display too light and harder to look at. The use of a black background will also help bring out the color you do add by giving it a greater contrast. In the display above a deer skin has been placed under the artifacts to give the display a slightly different color and then beads were placed in the display to give the display just a touch of color. When color is used in a larger display you should keep a solid background. By placing multiple colors behind an artifact, the artifact becomes distorted to the eye everywhere the color changes. This will really detract from the overall display. The use of color at the base of the display could really add to the attraction of your display.
