Stardate: 60298.1624
Setting: USS ANUBIS, Bridge

The possibility that there might be one or more ships waiting to spring an ambush on the valiant members of the USS ANUBIS had been just another reason that had driven the Shillian scientist to begin an extensive sensor scan of the system and of the two planets from which the distress signal could have been sent from.

Aside from the secondary lateral sensors designed to insure that no ship could sneak up on the ANUBIS, every sensor, scanner and over sophisticated magnifying glass were targeting the two worlds that were only minutes away thanks to the speed the ship had been made to travel at. With each passing second more details about the system and the planets could be made out permitting each member of the senior staff to study the part that most interested them.

Lieutenant Seth had naturally been preoccupied by the tactical aspect of their approach, using every bit of sensor information that passed in front of him to see if the theory of a trap could still prove to be true. So far there had been no signs of any ions, or any other residue that could have been left behind by a ship to support the supposition that they were heading into a trap. Dedicated to the performing of his duties as he was, the Chief of Security continued in his endeavour finding no shame in his being wrong in this particular matter.

The Executive Officer had also been interested in the data collected by the sensors, but her curiosity had been directed more towards the planets and what might have been the source of the distress signal that she had received while onboard of VIPER 1. The planets being so close to each other, in relation to the vastness of the cosmos, had made collecting sensor data exceptionally easy, a fact that Commander Rikar did not truly think about while observing and comparing all that had appeared on her console.

While the Chief of Security searched for hidden ships and the First Officer searched for the source of the signal, the Chief Science Officer had been busy analysing the sensor data on the two planets with no other goal than to better understand the dynamics of the worlds they were so rapidly approaching.

Since the OTOL System had not been officially explored and that none of its planets had been formally named, the Shillian scientist decided to identify the two worlds as OTOL A and OTOL B for the time being. Giving either of these massive astral bodies a more significant name had not been an option for the Chief Science Officer who dared not give a name to a world that might have already been named by whatever indigenous life might be found there. As far as the scientist had been concerned, OTOL A and OTOL B would be more than adequate to permit the data collected to be sorted and indexed with the least amount of confusion.

Although still quite a distance away from either planet, the information gathered by the long-range sensors had proven to be most informative about the dynamics of the planets. At first glance OTOL A appeared to be an A-CLASS world meaning that the volcanic activity all over the planet made it impossible for any type of civilization to settle down and build any type of permanent structure. Although this greatly reduced the possibilities that the signal received by Commander Rikar had come from somewhere on that planet, it did not entirely deny the possibility that a Federation ship could have crashed there. What it did mean, if this had indeed been the case, was that the crew of that ship would be in urgent need of assistance before their ship became trapped in the rapidly shifting tectonic plates.

As uninviting as OTOL A might have been, the Chief Science Officer had found the second planet to not be any better. Identified as an O-CLASS world, the watery world had been observed to have electro-magnetic storms that would have torn to pieces any metallic structure had one crashed on the liquid surface of the planet. Again this greatly reduced the possibilities that the distress signal could have originated from that particular world but it did not make it entirely impossible. According to the long-range sensors, several windows of calmness had been seen between the cells of the storms that covered more than eighty percent of the planet making it theoretically possible that a ship could crash and manage to transmit a signal before any of the storms moved over their position.

So far no metallic alloy normally used by the Federation in the construction of their ships had been located by the sensors, but this did not mean that there had not been a ship in the first place. On OTOL A the ship could have crashed into, or be moved to be in, one of the numerous pools of lava that covered a large area of the planet. Likewise on OTOL B there had been a large area for a crash ship to vanish into following an emergency landing. According to both of these scenarios, a Federation ship could have crashed on either of these planets, and their crew currently faced with a situation that would only become worse as time passed.

Hopefully, as the ANUBIS drew closer to the two planets, additional information would be gathered giving the crew of their would-be rescuers an idea as to prepare for a fiery rescue or a watery salvage operation. As soon as that determination would be done, the Shillian woman had intended to drop by Sickbay and see how the Marine Command Officer had been doing. The reason why she felt the need to do this had not been entirely clear to the Shillian but she still wanted to see first-hand how the Enaran had faired following his less than enviable run in with the Romulan Tal'Shiar agents.
