It had been four days since the Shillian woman had
been released from Sickbay, which approximately
equated to 96 hours of her being able to maintain her
new Cardassian appearance, or 5760 minutes of being
someone else other than who the Chief Science Officer
had been since the day of her birth.
Aside from the mental requirements involved in
suppressing her own immune system which had been ready
to fight the modifications made by Ensign Summers, the
Chief Science Officer had also been obliged to deal
with the reactions of those working around her. As a
Shillian the scientist had grown accustomed to being
looked at with a certain level of curiosity, but since
her released from Sickbay the head of the Science
Department had been the target of strange glares and
stares that far surpassed what she had been used to.
So to help her deal with this side of Intel which the
Shillian scientist had never expected, and hopefully
to learn to stop jumping each and every time she
looked in a mirror and gazed upon a reflection that
was not her own, the Chief Science Officer had decided
to forgo her usual domain in favour of a more relaxing
environment. Here, in the Black Hole Lounge, the
Shillian could sit away from the general crowd, read
up on who Denir was and what scientific achievements
the Cardassian scientist had claimed as her own, while
not having to deal with some of the more disturbing
glares that were being sent her way.
The Shillian had arrived about an hour ago and had
been so involved in her reading that she had not
noticed the entrance of Lieutenant Dawson who had also
failed to notice a Cardassian woman sitting in
relative isolation. Although present in the same
room, the two officers had been worlds apart, each one
of them dealing in their own way with the thoughts and
burdens that weighed so heavily on their shoulders.
---
Located deep within the boundaries of the Cardassian
Union, the space station known as NEGRIN NOR had
developed a solid reputation over the last few years
of offering those who worked there the best equipment
available in regards to biogenic research. The
reputation of the station had been made that much more
impressive by the association of several renowned
researchers who had migrated there to work on their
genetics projects away from overly curious eyes and
outside observers.
Several scientists, including some lesser known ones,
were in time attracted to the station by these
reputations which seemed to be accompanied by stories
of great rewards bestowed by the Cardassian High
Command and even at times from the Obsidian Order.
The possibility of having her work recognised at the
highest levels of government had driven Denir, who at
that time had only one minor discovery to her credit,
to leave all that she knew to dedicate her life to the
station and her research.
---
Over the last two years, Denir had managed to
distinguish herself in many fields to the point where
she was offered her own team to pursue specific
research on mutagenic organisms. Life on NEGRIN NOR
was simple even for the highest of ranking officers,
the distractions available to the personnel limited to
a couple of holosuits with a reservation list that
extended for months, and a low-end casino administered
by a shady Ferengi. Since her position did not allow
her to have her name brought higher on the waiting
list for the holosuits, Denir had found refuge from
her work in such pastimes as the Dabo-Wheel, Andorian
Cubes and a strange little invention which the Ferengi
claimed came from EARTH and which was referred to as a
'Slot-Machine'.
As the success of her research grew, so did her
rewards from the Cardassian High Command and Obsidian
Order which in turn made the scientist spend an
increasing amount of time playing at one of her
favourite games instead of working in her lab.
---
About a month ago, Denir was asked by the
administrator of the station to vacant her laboratory,
the amount of progress the Cardassian scientist having
dropped to nearly nil. From NEGRIN NOR the Cardassian
went to several locations including the TANGIERS
ORBITAL, a place that she had visited on occasion
while she enjoyed the full success of her research.
---
As the Shillian scientist took a moment to gather her
thoughts on what she had read about Denir, she
scrutinized the other patrons and noticed that not
only had Lieutenant Dawson been in the Black Hole
Lounge but that it seemed he had been accompanied by
the Exective Officer, the two of them sitting across
from one another and apparently having a rather
intense discussion.
