Although her fingers could feel the pulse of the Flight Control Officer against his skin, the Shillian scientist and Executive Officer could still not believe that the Breen had not killed the Hirogen for what he had done. Since her first class dealing with Alien races and their culture back at Starfleet Academy, the Breen had been labelled as being amongst the most ruthless of known races, at least of those races that first year cadets were being allowed to know of. The popular expression concerning this race said that turning one's back on a Breen was nothing short of a death sentence, so why had they spared the hunter despite his transgression against them?
As the head of the Science department of the USS ANUBIS, the Shillian needed to have this question answered since everything she had so far witnessed seemed to conflict with her understanding of the race. The Breen, as secretive as they might have been, had never been the type to hijack a ship for its technology, leaving such foul practice to the Borg or the Ferengi. As the Executive Officer of the HATHOR though, the woman could not help but feel an immeasurable level of joy at the continued existence of their Flight Control Officer who had escaped what the Shillian had been sure would have been certain death. Lieutenant Uxtar would likely wake up with a severe headache and lasting muscle pain, but he would wake up and that was all that mattered in the end.
Still under the vigilant scrutiny of the two armed Breen, the Shillian watched over the fallen Hirogen while his body worked off the effects of the heavy stun setting, while in the meantime the Commanding Officer glared at the leader of the invading force. The only logical reason the Chief Science Officer could come up with to explain why Uxtar had been stunned had been that the Breen had needed him to pilot the ship as they had earlier claimed, but that by itself had been a hard concept to accept for the Shillian woman.
While playing with Talia and introducing the child to the ways of science, the Shillian woman had often heard the girl repeat terms and expressions that the Chief Science Officer could only guess had been originally spoken by the former Intelligence Liaison Officer of the USS ANUBIS. One of these unexpected lessons from the youngest member of the Draxx family had been an absolute belief in the need to be ready when going on a mission. If the Breen knew enough about the location, strength and weaknesses of the USS HATHOR, how had it been that none of them had been able to take the time to assimilate the required information concerning the piloting of the ship?
That question haunted the Shillian scientist who found it extremely hard to believe that the Breen could have come this far on their quest to capture the HATHOR while at the same time allowing themselves to be unable to pilot on their own. Another matter that disturbed the First Officer had been the odd way the head of the Breen boarding party kept looking at her, as if the Shillian held some kind of interest for the alien, an interest that the scientist had no real desire to be made to understand.
As the round of Captain Serenna brought her back to the location where the Shillian had been kneeling next to the Hirogen hunter, the Commanding Officer joined the Chief Science Officer on the floor, trying to show as much concern for the Flight Control Officer as she could while speaking to the Executive Officer about more pressing matters. "We need to get internal sensors back online and find out just what we are dealing with," the Romulan hybrid whispered, making certain that her voice would not carry towards their captors.
"When I left my station," the Shillian replied matching the whispered voice of her Commanding Officer with her own, "I initialised a ship wide internal sweep. The information will not be accurate, but we should be able to get a good idea of how many Breen we are dealing with and where the rest of our people are."
The Commanding Officer of the USS HATHOR looked at her Executive Officer with a look of surprise. It had been easy to imagine that the hybrid had wanted to find a way to perform the very scan the scientist had just mentioned without raising suspicions, so it had come as a shock to learn that the task had already been performed. Thanks to the unintentional diversion provided by their Flight Control Officer, the ship wide scan had likely been performed without the knowledge of the disguised Marines.
"Am I dead?" The Hirogen Flight Control Officer muttered through his growls of pain and discomfort.
"Sorry Ensign," the Commanding Officer said as she reached down to support his head, "you are not that lucky. How do you feel?"
"I feel like I was run over by a starship flying at warp 9," Uxtar replied with a half smile. "Twice."
"We will need to have Doctor Summers give him a full medical check-up," the Shillian scientist said, wishing that the Chief Medical Officer or her Assistant had been on the bridge at that time.
"No more talk!" The Breen said through the metallic sounding translation provided by the computer. Based on what everyone knew about the race and their methods, none of the two officers who knew nothing about the truth of the situation dared to challenge their good fortune. So as painful as it might have been for him, the Flight Control Officer returned to his station with the help of the Commanding Officer and Executive Officer before both women returned to their respective seats to contemplate what their next move would be.
