Setting: USS HATHOR, Sickbay
Sleep had finally found her, about 4 hours ago, but now sleeping had
been the furthest thing from her mind. Lea had not been certain why she
had been on the bridge when she had been. The most likely reason had
been that the CMO had found some reason to see how David was doing. It
didn't matter what Lea did, the CEO seemed to always be on her mind hovering somewhere between dreams and fantasies. Lea enjoyed these thoughts, but they had one obvious setback. The CMO could not concentrate on her work.
Even after they had intercepted the message and Lea had volunteered to
help, the CMO could not focus. Lea had hoped that she might be able to
pick up on something by looking at the images one by one.
Unfortunately the CMO's mind kept wondering to other things.
"Serenna knows," Susan said as she walked into Sickbay, finding her
friend in the exact same position as when she had left.
"Knows what?" Lea asked absentmindedly, her eyes glued to the screen
that was on the desk in front of her.
"That the Federation President is actually an alien from another
dimension," Susan sighed, her hands coming to rest on her hips. "His goal is
to conquer the universe, enslave all of mankind and eat fried brains
for lunch," the Cns added. The moment Susan had walked in she knew that
Lea had not been working as she had said she would. The CMO's posture
had been clue enough, but the daydreaming voice Lea had used had settled it.
"Oh, that's nice," Lea said in that same tone. Susan sighed and shook
her head. The Cns had expected the tall tale to have *some* effect on
Lea. Instead the CMO had just continued as she had been, barely aware
that she had no longer been alone in Sickbay.
"Doctor Summers!" The Cns said after having cleared her throat, the two
words spoken with as much professionalism as she could muster.
"What?" Lea said, turning to face her friend for the first time since
the Cns had walked in.
"What did I say when I walked in?" Susan asked certain that she would
catch her friend high and dry.
"You said that Serenna knows about the message we intercepted," the CMO
replied without missing a beat. The grin on Lea's face spoke volumes
about her having been able to foil her friend's plan.
"Ok, what about after that?" The Cns added, not entirely convinced that
her friend had been listening as closely as she made it appear.
Lea's eyes began to roll in her head searching for answers that were
not there. Eventually the CMO gave up and admitted defeat, her friend
having expertly caught her. "Alright, I wasn't listening."
"You really need to stop thinking about him," Susan said, her voice
having returned to that of a friend. "You need to focus on the mission,"
the Cns added with a smile.
"I'm trying," Lea said with a very deep sigh. "When I think about Enaii I just can't bring myself to see how we are going to make this happen. So instead I try to think about something else, like the Cardassians. That makes me nervous and to be honest scares me to no end. The Cardassian are not all that weak, so to be given that much of a hard time, whoever it is has to be pretty strong. So I have a choice I can become depressed thinking about Enaii, Sabrina and Talia, or I can become a nervous wreck and think about that!" Lea concluded with, pointing to the small screen and the distorted image that she had been working on. Well sort of.
Susan found herself at a loss for words. She had not expected her
friend to be in such a state, but knowing the reasoning, Susan could now
understand Lea's predicament. As the HATHOR's Cns, Susan had to offer
some sort of support and comfort to the CMO. As her friend, Susan could
only think of one way to do this, so she reached out, wrapped her arms
around Lea and hugged her.
