"A CMO's Job is Never Done"

Setting: USS ANUBIS, Sickbay
Stardate: 60343.0600

Lea had set up camp right next to the ILO's bed. Both of her assistants had gone back to their quarters long ago leaving the CMO alone. Lea had not been complaining though because anyone who would have been in the room would have thought the CMO mad.

"That really must have been hard on you," Lea said to the unconscious woman lying on the bed. The CMO had not expected there to be an answer but at this point there had been nothing else for them to do. Enaii's condition had been beyond the understanding of anyone onboard including her own. So all that Lea could do had been to wait and talk.

"I wonder what it was like to have your body in a state of physical non-existence," the CMO said. Lea figured that Maya would have been a good person to have around if she had actually wanted a scientific answer. The truth of the matter though had been that the CMO had been more interested in the spiritual aspect of this unique happening. "Will you remember anything from your time as disembodied energy? I guess Talia and Sabrina will just be happy if you remember them. Thalking of which, they miss you. I noticed that Sabrina had been keeping an eye on you from Susan's office. She probably did not want to show any signs of personal weakness to the crew, or to you."

Lea stopped and chuckled to herself. For a brief moment the CMO thought that she had sounded like Maya. Not in regards to knowledge of science but in the scientist being able to go on and on talking about everything and nothing. That thought gave Lea something else to throw at the unconscious woman.

"Maybe that is what you need," the CMO whispered to Enaii. "I am sure that you listening to Maya talking about the science behind what you went through would be enough to get you up and running. Might have to call Pravat in to rescue Maya though, but that would be an acceptable risk. What do you think?"

The CMO waited for an answer or any sign that the ILO had heard what Lea had had said. As time passed Lea's hopes dwindled to nothing as Enaii remained exactly as she had been. It had been a worthy try but the threat had proven futile.

Lea leaned back in her chair and sighed. When a heart stopped working she could use a cardio-resuscitator to get hit beating again. If the lungs stopped, there were several ways available to the CMO to continue to provide oxygen to the cells. For each and every organ within the humanoid body Lea had a tool she could use with one exception. There had been no known way of getting a person out of a coma. What really bugged the CMO though was that medically speaking Enaii could not be diagnosed as being in a coma. The brainwave patterns displayed on the screen showed her to be *aware* if not *awake*.

All that the CMO could now do was to hope that someone within NEW ALEXANDRIA had a cure. Maybe something that had not made the medical journals or had been kept secret for some strange reason. Failing this the ILO would be left to her own to find a way out of this condition with the rest of the crew as powerless observers.

As strange as all of this might have been though, Lea had to admit that Enaii did appear more at peace than she had ever seen her before. Maybe in the greater scheme of things this had not been all bad if it had granted the ILO a rest that she would have otherwise never obtained.
