Setting: USS ANUBIS, Sickbay
Lea grinned to herself. There was something about new Ensigns that just seemed so strange. As great as the Academy training might have been, it was far from being enough. The universe was a dangerous place, and the ANUBIS seemed to deal with the worse of it. Yet Elliot seemed more than happy to be onboard and eager to face whatever challenges were tossed his way.
On his end Ensign Thomas had appeared ready to tackle everything. Except the woman that appeared on the other side of the doors as they hissed open.
"Aki?"
"Elliot?"
"Nice that you two know each other," the CMO said. Once again Lea wished that Susan had been there. As a Cns, Susan might have been able to identify the type of relationship the two Ensign had shared. Or still shared for that matter, there had been no way to know. Lea could have easily jumped in with the obvious question, but instead the CMO decided to remain professional. "You two can catch up later, I need to do a full exam on Ensign Mitshiba and you need to head to the bridge."
The ANUBIS's new Ops officer appeared taken aback by the CMO's words. Elliot's thought had been somewhere else entirely which only deepened the mystery. The two Ensigns shared a glance and traded positions across the open doorway to Sickbay.
"Ensign Mitshiba reporting as per Admiral Koneki's instructions," Akira said almost snapping to attention. Had the Ensign come across a little more on the friendly side, Lea might have asked about her and Elliot. Maybe Susan would have more luck on that aspect when she performed the crew's psychological evaluation.
"Welcome to the ANUBIS," Lea said inviting Akira into Sickbay. "Have a
seat on the main biobed, I will be right with you."
The CMO watched as Akira complied with the given instructions. Lea had
previously taken the time to review Ensign Mitshiba's file and had
noted her skills in science and medicine. Since both the positions of CMO
and CSciO had been taken, Akira would become an assistant, but to which?
"So, how do you like the ANUBIS so far?" Lea asked while examining the
Ensign.
"The ship seems very impressive," Akira replied. "At least based on
what I have seen of it, which in all honesty is not all that much. I am
curious though as to why NEW ALEXANDRIA and the ships attached to it all
seem to share this Egyptian theme.
"You will have to as Admiral Koneki for that one," the CMO replied. So
far Lea thought that Akira and Maya would likely get along together.
The two of them seemed to have a similarly inquisitive mind, always
asking questions.
The rest of the physical examination went by quickly and silently with
only a few interruptions. All of them had been from Akira in regards to
some medical equipment the Ensign had noticed within Sickbay. Because
of that Lea almost hoped that Ensign Mitshiba would be assigned as the
aCMO. There was something about Akira that just sat well with Lea,
although the CMO had not been sure what.
"You are as fit as can be," the CMO said as she put her tricorder away.
"In fact I might go as far as to say that you appear ready to climb
Mount Everest."
"Actually I have never tried Mount Evrest, but have done Mount Fuji a
couple of times," Akira said. Lea immediately noticed the Ensign's grin
and realised that she had not been joking.
"I guess your next stop will be the Bridge. I suspect that Lt. Cmdr.
Maya will have your assignment onboard the ANUBIS," Lea said ready to
dismiss Akira from Sickbay.
"No need to have her go to the Bridge," Maya said as she stepped into
the room. "We have received the final details of Ensign Mitshiba's
assignment to the ANUBIS. It seems that Admiral Koneki had needed some time
to confer with the captain before making a final decision. By the way I
am Lt. Cmdr. Maya, the ANUBIS' CSciO, and it is a pleasure to welcome
you aboard. I am sure that you will become a valued member of the crew
and will in no time prove yourself to us all."
"Maya," Lea cut in abruptly. The CSciO had a solid reputation of being
able to go on for hours without actually saying anything. So the CMO
had thought it best to step in and have Maya get to the point for Akira's
sake. Not to mention Lea's growing curiosity as to what the Ensign's
assignment and position would be. "Can she get her assignment before we
have to leave for our next mission?"
"I'm sorry," Maya replied, her cheeks suddenly touched with a hint of
red. "I was so excited that I thought I should bring the orders down.
Apparently this excitement made me forget that I should have actually
handed her the PADD instead of just talking about it."
Feeling a massive headache creeping up, the CMO stepped forward and
took the PADD from Maya. Telling the Lt. Cmdr. How she felt would have
landed Lea in more hot water, something that she didn't need at this time.
"Congratulations Ensign Mitshiba," Lea said as she read the information
on the PADD. "Looks like you are going to be quite busy. Admiral Koneki
as officially appointed you as the assistant to *both* the CMO and CSciO."
Akira said nothing, instead just sitting on the biobed with a blank
expression on her face. The news had come as just a shock to Lea and Maya,
although both appeared rather pleased to have a new Assistant to boss
around.
