The FCO's mind was working on many options. He was sure he had a valid theory that would allow them to regain minimal power to some ships system. But he wanted confirmation. Looking around the bridge he noticed that a number of pockets of crew had developed. Noticing the Marine Commander and Uxtar heading once again for the turbolift, he tapped his big Hirogen on the shoulder.
"Uxtar I overheard you and Pravat discussing weapons, in my quarters you will find a number of swords of various types. I only ask that you bring the Katana in the red scabbard back to me." Derek said quickly.
Uxtar eyed his friend cautiously… "You never mentioned these to me before my friend."
"They are a family tradition on my mother's side; I tend to keep them put out of sight and out of mind. They are crated in the closet of my sleeping quarters. I am sure you will make good use of them." The Vulcan gave just a wisp of a smile before his face returned to that of a stoic Vulcan, because he knew just how much the big Hirogen loved his weapons.
The SEC/TAC gave what passed for a knowing look as he turned and followed the Marine CO back into the bowels of the ship.
The FCO turned and looked for the CEO, seeing him in a small group near the main view screen he walked over.
"Excuse me Ensign Norheim… I have a theory that may regain some power." Derek stated flatly.
The CEO not having known the FCO that long was not really sure how to answer such a comment, before he could… the Chief of Operations spoke.
"What is your idea Lieutenant? Does this involve a reverse dampening field, and how do you plan to power it?" Asked Ensign Thomas.
Glancing at the small group around him Derek lost some of his confidence but he went on anyway.
"As I mentioned before I noticed that power was only drained from circuits once they were actually operated, though the drain appeared to be immediate it was not, some percentage of power actually got through before the drain was active or complete."
Ensign Norheim spoke with a thoughtful look in his eyes… "So you are saying that any power source not in use when we hit the drain zone could still be used, IF we can protect it from the drain?"
"Exactly, I think we can either fool whatever is doing the draining, or at least mask the actual power source." The FCO spoke with a confidence that was slowly returning.
"But we do not know how, who, or what is doing the draining how can we protect the power source?" The confused COO asked.
Derek knew he was on the hook, but they had to try something, so he went on… "I think that if we take a multiphasic shield generator put it in parallel with a sensor dispersion field we can hide the power signature. If we then change the power distribution system to a modified broadcast type we can get a few basic systems back online. The only drawback is even if we run our power source at 100% we would only realize 33.7% usable power."
The ANUBIS'S new Chief Engineer looked thoughtfully at the Vulcan when he spoke. "I think I see where you are coming from, if enough power gets through to start the circuit, it would then become self sustaining in hiding itself from whatever is draining our power. How did you plan to test this theory Lieutenant?"
The half human looked thoughtful for a moment… "We can use one of the shuttle craft. If it works on it, we can use the DRAGONSEYE since it already has both multiphasic and sensor dispersion equipment on board. If it doesn't work we still have the Vipers and other shuttles to test on."
Derek waited silently as the group around him digested and thought about the possibilities.
It was the big robotics engineer who finally spoke. "It would seem we would better off to be on the hanger deck rather than the bridge, which is getting rather crowded."
They had not noticed during their conversation that more crew members had come up from below deck, and the bridge was indeed getting overly crowded. Almost to a man they headed for the turbolift. As the FCO turned to follow he almost knocked down the ships counselor, quickly grabbing her he held her to her feet as they were bumped into by other crew members.
"I think you can let go of me now lieutenant." Susan stated with a calmness she really did not feel. She was still working out exactly how she felt about all that had happened since they had mind-melded, and she had discovered what he had done. Add to that his recent decision to bury his human half in favor of the Vulcan side…well she just hadn't had the time to process all the information. But the real surprise was his reaction.
"Susan… I" and than like a switch was thrown the Vulcan returned, "Lieutenant Mei are you all right?" Stormwind asked in a monotone.
Susan had caught the momentary lapse of the Vulcan and filed it away for later study if necessary. "Yes lieutenant thank you"
Derek gave her a slight nod of his head and quickly headed for the turbolift, and the relative safety of the hanger deck.
