Stardate: 61036.1645
Enaii knew a great many things, more things still, she did not. It was
by training perhaps, or by upbringing, that she had learned to harbour a
deep-seeded initial distrust of the unknown. She did not fear it, but
she did not take it for granted either. The unknown was to be observed,
categorized, claimed then possessed… the unknown existed only to become known.
Enaii did not know these creatures.
Lurking in the shadows, she had travelled this ship from bow to stern
and from deck to cargo hold. She had explored its secrets and violated the
most private moments of its crew. But it was down below the surface of the
water that intrigued her, beyond the areas where any of the ANUBIS' crew had
been allowed, two well armed men of canine appearance stood chained to the
wall by their throats, guarding some secret within.
Enaii had tried to approach the area, but had quickly back-stepped as
one of the men seemed to alert to her scent. With some initial hesitation,
she had managed to determine the limits of the guards' range, and had found
herself a relatively safe corner to watch them from.
For what seemed like hours she had watched as only the highest ranking
Catian-like humanoids passed through the passageway, each one stopping
to scratch the loyal guards behind their ears and offer them a treat. In
whole honesty, the scene of one humanoid treating another as a valued pet was
quite disturbing.
It was only when some small movement on the other side of the cabin
caught her eye, that Enaii's attention was diverted. Straight across from
her, clearly out of the arc of the canines' scent, a shadowy figure stood.
Only because her eyes were accustomed to the darkness, did she see it.
Vaguely female in shape, lacking fur completely, with eyes that appeared to swallow the shadow around them. The humanoid creature seemed to hear something Enaii could not, react to it, and fell further back into the
darkness.
Her instinct getting the best of her, the Intel Operative left the
impenetrable cabin and followed her new unknown, the creature, as it
made its' way through the secondary corridors of the ship.
The creature was good, but not perfect. It left long, slender footprints in the dust, dislodged loose items as it passed, and more than once made sounds that caught the fleeting attention of the ship's cat-like crewmen. It also failed to notice Enaii.
The Intel Operative followed as close as she dared. She did not have
any desire to alert this female creature to her presence. It was clearly
female now, in its' movement and form. It also harboured a clear hatred for
the humanoids around it. The dangerousness of the female hung thick in the
air, and Enaii did not like the taste of it.
Before her, the creature stopped, lurking once again in the shadows, as
a huntress waiting for prey. Instantly, Enaii took up post in a shadowed
portion of the chamber, and watched as the creature inched forward,
closer to the two humans that stood alone in the light of the room.
Her blood rushing, and her adrenaline kicking in, the Operative allowed
the words of the officers to drone out as she positioned herself in such a
position that the shadow creature would have to strike past her to get
to the officers. If she had not been certain of her ability to delay an
attack and protect the women, Enaii would have attacked the huntress, but for
now, she still wanted to observe it.
Having secured her position, and the relative safety of her crewmates,
Enaii allowed herself to listen in on the ramblings of the Chief Medical
Officer and Counsellor.
"I know that you will think me nuts," The Doctor whispered, "but I feel
like there is a dark presence on this ship. Something is hiding in the
shadows and keeping an eye on us."
Enaii felt a slight grin *almost* grace her features, the medical officer may still become a proper officer for a ship the likes of the ANUBIS. At any rate, at least she could sense the danger, and the Counselor's suggestion that the crew remain in pairs would keep everyone that much less vulnerable to attack.
As the two women ascended the stairs to the upper deck, the creature
stepped out of the shadows, revealing itself for the first time.
With a hide as grey as shale, and eyes darker than the shadows she had
emerged from, the creature, clearly of aquatic descent, and most
probably amphibious, smiled sadistically as Enaii moved herself to a much less
visible area.
