Captain James Cook first sailed into Trinity Bay in 1770 but it took more than another 100 years for the settlement, that developed along it's banks, to be recognised. In 1876 the Port at Trinity Inlet took it's name from the then Queensland Governor, William Wellington Cairns. In 1903 it was proclaimed a Town and became a City in 1923. Now, with a resident population of around 130,000, Cairns has become Australia's tropical northern playground and the jumping off point for not just the Great Barrier Reef but also the Cape, the Tablelands and Papua New Guinea. |
