Since Jorge de Meneses of Portugal first landed on the island in the early 1500's and named it 'Ilhas dos Papuas' (Island of the fuzzy hairs) PNG has enjoyed, or not, occupation by several different countries including the Dutch, Germans, British, Australian and the Japanese, during WW2. In 1975 PNG gained full independence from Australia and it has to be said has had a somewhat difficult time developing nationhood, probably in large part due to it's many different cultures, languages and traditions. But it's getting there. |
