Four Pups

OK.  The house is in chaos
Now.  But who cares?
My days are spent watching.
They dart, speed, jump,
Run, tumble, toss, tear
Through paper, drag towels
Anyplace they can, argue
With each other, fierce growls
Instantly forgotten,
And come running at
PUP PUP PUP toward the
Food bowl that is devoured
With all the speed the four sets
Of teeth can manage.

Oh, the joy.  How to explain
The milky smell of puppies,
The warm fur, the squirming
Bodies, the faces that look up
Expectantly at yours?
Is there anything as sweet as this?

Having been a mother, I remember
Cradling the child in my arm,
Putting her to my breast,
Feeling her small pink mouth
Swell with my milk.

It is like that Again.  Vicarious, to watch
Misty feed them, curl herself around
And over them, push them quickly
Into place, and settle into sleep.
Whatever dreams they have
As their legs twitch, their eyelids
Flutter briefly, are the dreams of
Absolute content.
