How long I sat in the cavernous dark staring with fixed stare at the wall where the white flame blazed and shadows danced How long I watched the subtle flicker of light and dark shifting silently in my seat my limbs uncomfortable my neck astrain Perhaps the clock hands might whisper a measured dance of seconds minutes and hours while my fixed eyes sought to drink all the truth that light might surrender But the mind knows not that time nor the heart's racing jumps I can only tell you that when I emerged as one blinded by beauty The night was dark in Harvard Square and the pavement wet and neither the joking beggar nor the earnest street-corner philosophers knew the bright flame and soul fever that consumed me, the enlightened. |
