("Things You Taught Me")

Episode 8

Mayuko apologizes to Shinichi as she pulls away, but Shinichi tells her that it's alright, that he can also feel the sorrow (kanashii). He says that after today, Mayuko should be able to identify with that feeling. Mayuko looks at Shinichi and seeing his tears, starts to feel bad for causing Shinichi such pain but Shinichi stops her, saying that it's not just sorrow, but also happiness, and that he feels very moved. He explains that people sometimes shed tears when they feel moved. He says he feels moved by Mayuko's feelings. Mayuko's happy for Shinichi, saying that he is like normal people now, and won't have to work at crying anymore.

Mayuko wants to know how normal people deal with sadness and if it should be kept bottled up into, but Shinichi says that it is very painful to hold everything inside. Mayuko thinks it's scary if the heart is filled with sorrow, because then you could never let it go. Shinichi then suggests that they go somewhere where they can throw their sorrows out to sea.

They bury Tear, and are now by the graveside. Mayuko is burying her sorrow there, saying "Tear is no longer here..." Shinichi tells her that Tear has become a memory that will live forever within her heart, that because Mayuko loved Tear, and that is why she felt sorrow. Mayuko asks if it was the same for Shinichi (with Muki) and that's what made him lose his ability to cry. Shinichi says he doesn't know.

As they leave, Shinichi asks Mayuko if she still wants to persevere with her job. Mayuko says she does but she can't anymore, and Shinichi tries to encourage her again, suggesting that they work at it together, because he doesn't want to see her give up something when she liked it so much. He says he will help clear things up for her at WeatherWorld.

When Mayuko goes home, she asks Akiko about hugging and how she didn't like the feeling of being held. Akiko says that if you loved and wanted to be with that person, then being hugged is a good thing, and she goes on to say that if you loved someone, you would want to protect that person... she then stops and looks at Mayuko in surprise (it's belatedly struck her that the question is kind of strange), asking why Mayuko wanted to know that - but Mayuko doesn't answer and leaves the room.

Shinichi goes to WeatherWorld and after much supplication, they agree to give Mayuko another chance.

Mayuko goes to Jun, asking him to help her "practise" embracing. The request catches Jun off-guard and makes him uncomfortable but he agrees, and when he pulls Mayuko into his arms, he is overwhelmed by his feelings for her and starts to tighten his embrace, which makes Mayuko uncomfortable and she tells him to stop.

Jun then goes to Shinichi and asks him not to see his sister in private again. He reminds Shinichi that he'd promised to be a "doctor" to her, and reminds him not to "let the same thing happen" (I guess he's referring to the Muki incident - seems like everyone knows!!) again. Shinichi tells him that he really cares about Mayuko and he won't let it happen again, but Jun doesn't believe him, given Shinichi's past, and tells him not to harbour any feelings for his sister.

Mayuko emails Misaki about the embracing thing, writing that if it makes Shinichi happy, then she wants to learn how to do it. Jun walks into her room to apologize about the hugging but then he sees the last line in her email message about wanting to make Shinichi happy by learning to hug. He's hurt by the message and leaves the room hurriedly.

Mayuko is with Shinichi, and she tells him how she wants to learn to embrace, and he says that the most important thing is to have the "right" feeling. Mayuko asks if the "feeling" is really liking and wanting to protect that person, saying that it is what Akiko has told her. She asks Shinichi if he thinks she'll be able to, saying that she wants to make sensei happy. Shinichi tells her that he already does, and she's happy to hear him say that, and she asks him what it's like to love someone, but he can't really answer her, and then she asks what it is like to be loved by someone.

Shinichi gives her a mobile phone, and when she tells him that she hates mobiles, he says that he'll be the only one who'll call, and it's only for emergencies when he can't find her. She agrees to take it, saying "sensei to dake" ( only with Shinichi).

As Mayuko leaves, Rina comes up to Shinichi saying that she wanted to congratulate him for being able to cry again. She tells him that she saw what happened that day at his house, and says that she wouldn't have thought that "tears lost through sympathy...could be regained through sympathy". Shinichi tells her it's not sympathy, and she asks if he only had sympathy for one side - and if it was for her sister, or for Mayuko. Shinichi says that she doesn't understand, and he tries to explain that while Mayuko isn't capable of handling emotions like others, her emotions are nonetheless as strong as other people's , and because she's unstable and needs help, he feels compelled to protect her. Rina comments that Mayuko is just like a child, needing assistance for everything, and then she adds that "does Shinichi think everything is solved just because of a few tears?" She says that she won't forgive him, and she knows that her sister wouldn't either.

Rina then goes to see Jun, telling him that she thinks they should stop Mayuko's therapy. She says that if Mayuko continues to get therapy from Shinichi, she may end up remembering an "unhappy incident" from her childhood, but she doesn't tell Jun what that incident is.

Jun is worried and goes home to ask Mayuko if she had done or remembered anything since her therapy session today. He then asks her not to continue with her therapy or to see Shinichi again. He sees her mobile, and she tells him that Shinichi gave it to her, which upsets him, and he takes it from her, telling her not to see Shinichi again.

Jun then goes downstairs to confront his parents, and repeats his request that they stop Mayuko's therapy, saying that he thinks Mayuko and Shinichi's relationship has gone beyond a doctor-patient's one. He says that Mayuko and Shinichi were together last night until daybreak, and he no longer trusted Shinichi. But Yohei tells him that it's not something for him to be concerned about, and tells him to go study instead. Jun loses his temper and says that all Yohei cares about is that he has someone to take over his precious company...because Mayuko couldn't, that's why he got Jun as a replacement for her...and he wasn't going to do it! Yohei slaps him for his insolence, and Jun runs out of the house. The next morning, he still hasn't returned yet, and Mayuko is worried that it's her fault that Jun has disappeared.

Yohei goes to Sakuma's office to talk to Shinichi, requesting that he should not forget his role as Mayuko's doctor. After he leaves, Sakuma asks Shinichi about his being able to cry, and Shinichi wonders if it means he has left his past behind, but Sakuma doesn't think so, saying that the tears were shed over his memories at that time.

Chihiro finds Jun in the park, and asks him what's wrong, saying that he shouldn't be so worried about Mayuko. Jun says that even though he doesn't share their blood ties, he still considers them to be his family, but he's not sure what he should do now. Chihiro tells him that she'll always stand by him, and Jun, feeling touched, pulls her into his arms and starts to kiss her. But he doesn't feel right doing it, because he then pulls away and apologizes. Chihiro, who obviously likes him a lot, says he doesn't have to say sorry but then Jun just walks off, and leaves Chihiro crying in the park.

Shinichi is at Muki's grave, explaining to her that he has to leave what happened between them behind, because otherwise he won't be able to go on. He says that from the day that she dies, he hasn't been able to let go, but no matter what he does, she still can't come back. In his weakest moments, there has only been one person who has been by his side, supporting him and giving him the strength to continue. So he hopes that Muki can forgive him for his weakness and he promises never to forget her.

Mayuko calls Jun on his mobile, asking him to come home, but Jun cuts her off, saying that all she needs now is Shinichi. Mayuko then calls Shinichi and tells him about Jun's disappearance. She tells him that Jun told her not to see Shinichi anymore but wouldn't give her a reason, and she asks Shinichi why. Shinichi says he has something he needs to tell her...

Jun goes to see Takuma, thinking that Takuma being such good friends with his dad, he might be able to tell him who his real parents are. But Takuma tells him that he doesn't know, that he only knows Jun came from an adoption centre. Jun looks disappointed and he tells Takuma he is also worried about Mayuko because she doesn't seem to understand the implications of what she has remembered. Takuma offers to help in whatever way he can.

At Shinichi's home, he tells Mayuko about Muki and him: how they'd met 3 years ago when he was still a pyschiatrist at the hospital and she was his patient, and how he'd fallen in love with her and they'd arranged to meet on this date, and he planned to propose to her, only he was late because he got lost, and then just when he'd almost reached her, she got hit by a car. Shinichi says that he still remembers the hopeful expression on her face when she saw him arriving, just before she got hit. He says "if only he hadn't fallen in love with her... or if only he hadn't got lost." He says that because he didn't want to face up to the reality of the accident, he lost the ability to cry. And it is only because of Mayuko, that he is able to cry again. And even though he hadn't expected this to happen, he is determined to "cherish" her above all others. Mayuko questions the word "cherish", and he explains that he doesn't think he can ever love another person again, but that he hopes from now on, he will continue to live for her..."

Mayuko is worried that this conversation is hurting Shinichi, and that being a doctor for her in spite of the fact that he didn't want to be one is also hurting him. Mayuko then asks Shinichi to embrace her, and as Shinichi is holding her (not very tightly), she tells him that she loves him and that she now understands that being hugged is like being loved. She asks him to tighten his embrace....
