Shinichi's phone rings and it's Akiko, asking him to bring Mayuko home immediately, and that it's not necessary to do it in person, and that he can just put her in a taxi. Mayuko worries if Akiko's mad, and thinks it's her fault for not telling Akiko beforehand, but Shinichi tells her that it's because everyone is worried about the two of them. Back at home, Akiko tells Mayuko that she won't tell Yohei this time, but that she shouldn't sneak off to Shinichi's like that again. As she is talking, the phone rings and it's Takuma, calling to tell her that Jun is with him and not to worry. Jun gets up to go (he's a little embarrassed at imposing on Takuma like that) but Takuma tells him not to go until he's thought things over first, and that he can stay for as long as he likes. Akiko tells Yohei about Takuma's call, and Yohei doesn't seem to trust Takuma, which gets Akiko all worked up and she asks Yohei to bring Jun back but then Yohei is still mad at Jun, and says that he and Mayuko are just the same. "Dew is the essence of rain," thinks Mayuko, as she watches the raindrops splatter against the skylight in her bedroom. "All of Nature yearn for the nourishment of water, a heaven-sent blessing." But to Mayuko, it is the "clear and clean spirit" of rain that she seeks. At Shinichi's office, Mayuko undergoing her therapy session while Akiko looks on. Shinichi teaches her how to handle work-related issues, and when the session ends, Mayuko starts to tell Shinichi about her wanting to take the qualifying exam for weather forecasters, but Akiko cuts her off, thanking Shinichi. (She is obviously there to prevent further intimacy between Mayuko and Shinichi.) But as they leave, Shinichi gets Akiko off to one side, and asks her if he is not to be trusted. Akiko tells him that she trusts his ability as a doctor, but doesn't want there to be "anything else". Meanwhile Yohei goes to Takuma, asking him to get Jun to return home. Takuma suggests that Yohei should approach Jun directly, but after Yohei asks him again to help, he agrees to pass his concerns onto his son, and to try to persuade him to go home. As Yohei leaves, Rina comes in and passes a report to Takuma that he'd asked for but then tells him that she doesn't want him to publicize it. Mayuko's in her room studying the weather. She emails Shinichi saying that she wanted to tell him how much she liked the skies, because that's the same way she feels towards Shinichi. She says that she had many other thing she wants to tell him when they next get together. Shinichi emails her back, suggesting that they go to the park next Monday (June 5). When they next meet in front of the amusement park, Mayuko is laughing, because she finds it funny that they are on a "date", but she's glad too, because she's been very bored lately. As they start to walk in, Mayuko gets distracted by this hanging display and she takes her camera out to take a picture, when Shinichi notices she's not by his side anymore and doubles back, asking if she's done. She apologizes, saying that she's sorry and will "try to be normal and not do anything strange today". Before choosing a ride, Mayuko has to first time the ride (how long it takes to rise, how long it's suspended for, etc.) because she tells Shinichi that she needs to remember the timing, so she won't be scared. She does this for each ride they go on, and they seem to have a lot of fun. As they're walking around, Mayuko suddenly asks Shinichi if he wants to hold hands (she thinks this is something one must do on a date), but when Shinichi holds out his hand, she gets nervous and says she can't. Shinichi tells her not to force it. When they sit down to eat, she tells Shinichi about the weather-forecaster's qualifying exam and says that she needs more specialised information which she doesn't have at home, but which are at WeatherWorld (but she can't go there). Shinichi says he'll ask for her the next time he goes to the office. Shinichi then asks her not to call him "sensei" (teacher) because they're "on a date", but after casting around for another name, Mayuko decides she wants to call him "sensei" because that's who he is to her. Shinichi looks disappointed. Later, Mayuko chooses to go on a merry-go-round, but Shinichi's a bit embarrassed because they're so old, but he decides to go along with her. While they're on the ride, he looks uncomfortable while she seems to be very happy and lost in her own world. Takuma brings Rina's article to Yohei, to persuade him to separate Mayuko from Shinichi, saying that he thinks Mayuko should be kept away from "such a guy" (the report refers to Shinichi's past with Muki.) Mayuko and Shinichi are walking home, and she's telling him how happy she is, and he replies that he is too, when Jun comes running up to them and tells Shinichi that he'll take Mayuko home. Mayuko's glad to see him back, and when Jun asks why Mayuko's out when she's supposed to stay home, she tells him that she finds it strange there without him. He says that he'll be there if it's what she wants, but why does she need him there? While Mayuko's pondering on this, he asks her if she really likes Shinichi and she says yes. He then tells her that she's not suitable for Shinichi and that she shouldn't see him anymore. Jun adds that while Shinichi doesn't need Mayuko, Jun needs her and also she needs him. When they get home, Jun tells her mom about Mayuko meeting Shinichi and says he came back becomes she needs somone to look after her. Akiko goes to Mayuko's room and tries to explain to her how she's mistaken Shinichi's caring for her as love, when it's just a doctor's concern for his patients. Yohei comes home in a temper and forbids Mayuko to leave the house ever again, showing them Rina's report, which is headlined "Todai Hospital psychiatrist's love affair with his patient", which talks about Shinichi's past with Muki and his present relationship with Mayuko. But Muki tells them that she already knew about Muki, and then says if the problem lies in her being his patient, then she can just stop her therapy. But Jun says it's not just that, and that in view of Shinichi's past, Mayuko cannot be together with him. Later, Mayuko tries to sneak out of the house but is intercepted by Akiko. Jun goes to see Shinichi telling him about what just happened in their home, and asks Shinichi to just be a doctor to Mayuko. He says that's all Mayuko needs from Shinichi, and it's just Shinichi who is forcing the issue and it's just one-sided love on his side. He asks Shinichi if he's really able to separate feelings of love with those of trust between himself and Mayuko, and then tells him that he, Jun, will take care of Mayuko from now on. Shinichi asks him back if he is clear about his own feelings towards Mayuko. Jun argues that Mayuko doesn't have any clearcut feelings, but Shinichi tells him he's wrong, and that Mayuko does have very strong and distinct feelings, and it's just that Jun doesn't understand them. "And Shinichi does?", Jun challenges. Shinichi replies that to him, the process of reaching this understanding is love, and in all honesty, there is still a lot he doesn't understand. Mayuko also has her own interpretations of love, and these aren't wrong either. Jun then shows Shinichi Rina's article and tells him not to implicate Mayuko in his affairs and to just leave him family alone. Mayuko emails Misaki saying that she really wanted to see Shinichi and asks what she should do. Misaki emails back saying that Mayuko is in love, but that it's not possible for people like them to love like normal people. Shinichi goes to see Sakuma, who has also seen the article. Shinichi tries to explain to Sakuma, saying that he tried to stop himself with Mayuko but he couldn't help it; the more he wants to help Mayuko, the more he feels that his own emotions becoming more fragile (as in susceptible, I guess), and he seems to have no willpower. Sakuma sympathises with Shinichi's situation and says that it can't be helped. Shinichi is determined to continue his work on autism, saying it's not just for Mayuko's sake but also his own. Jun goes into Mayuko's room, which is empty, and finds an email from Shinichi on her computer, arranging to meet her at the park at 3:30 pm. He checks his watch and races off to intercept them. Meanwhile, Mayuko who was hiding in her closet, sneaks out of the house. Jun goes to the park and realises that he'd been tricked, and runs off. (Misaki taught Mayuko how to create fake emails.) Shinichi then meets Mayuko in the park and tells her that she shouldn't do this as her family will worry. She tells him she really wanted to see him but he says that they can't meet anymore. She asks him if it's because he doesn't like her anymore, and he says it's not that, and that it's his fault that others no longer trust him. Mayuko then asks Shinichi to lie to her and tell her that he dislikes her so she can be reconciled to them not meeting again. He tells her that if she knows it to be a lie, it won't be lying anymore, but she asks him to try and so finally, he tells her that he dislikes her, and how she's troublesome and can never understand others' feelings, etc. All the while he's talking, she's repeating to herself "sensei wa watashi ga kirai" (sensei dislikes me) and continues to say it as she wanders off. As she goes home alone, she breaks down and cries. When Mayuko gets home, her family is waiting for her, and Yohei slaps her in anger. She breaks down and tells them that Sensei doesn't like her anymore and she now feels sorrow ("kanashii") even though it was something he didn't want to teach her. As Yohei leaves the room, he suddenly collapses on the floor... - End of Episode Nine - |
