("Things You Taught Me")

Episode Five

The next morning, as Jun and Mayuko leaves the house, Jun asks Mayuko if her job was going well and when she says yes, he asks if there were any problems at work. Mayuko looks at Jun in some surprise and he hurriedly says that it's good if there isn't any and they part company. Jun still looks worried, but back at home, Akiko is being optimistic, saying to Yohei that she thinks things may be okay as Mayuko seems happy still.

At Weather World, Mayuko's colleagues are gossipping about the article. Keiko says that she always felt that Mayuko was a bit strange, but others felt that she didn't seem crazy. Mayuko arrives at this point and the others are clearly uncomfortable around her, and avoiding her.

Shinichi goes to Sakuma's office, showing him the article. Sakuma is concerned that it will be painful for Mayuko, but although he doesn't think that she will be fired from her job, he's worried that the relationship between her and her colleagues will suffer, because society doesn't understand autism and will react in an adverse manner. She would be able to perform much better when those around her are not aware of her disorder. Shinichi asks Sakuma to see Mayuko.

Takuma calls Yohei at his office, who thanks him for his concern and his phone call to Jun earlier. Takuma explains that he has been quite worried about the situation with Mayuko, saying that Shinichi is friends with the reporter (Rina) who wrote the article and telling Yohei to be on the lookout for him.

At work, Mayuko is being told off by Keiko for mixing up some of the documents which she had asked her to photocopy earlier. Ino-san calls her in for a private meeting and asks her if what the magazine said is true and if she really has autism. When she confirms it, he tells her that their company had never hired someone like that before, and they want to have a talk with her family, asking her to arrange it.

When she leaves work, Mayuko finds Misaki waiting for her outside the company, and they go off together. (Meanwhile, Shinichi is waiting at the bus-stop where she usually gets off on her way home.) Mayuko asks Misaki if a magazine has written about her autism, making those around her uncomfortable and unsure of how they should treat her. Misaki tells Mayuko to give up, saying that the hardest thing for them is to gain the understanding of other people. Mayuko questions whether she really can't do the job she wants, and says that she has learned so much from Shinichi.

Mayuko tells Misaki that when her colleague was shouting at her today, it reminded her of something in her past. Misaki asks if she is scared when thinking about her past, because to Misaki, memories are like a black void in which the present is swallowed up by the past. Misaki says that people like them is unable to forget... Mayuko says that is why we can only try to tolerate it ("gaman suru"). Misaki starts to sing "London bridge is falling down"... and tells Mayuko that it's one of her favourite songs, and that she has many songs stored in her head. She then asks Mayuko what things she enjoys, and Mayuko replies that "to finish doing the things I was unable to finish before". Misaki says that it would be very painful for Mayuko to lose the affinity she has with the sky, and that is probably why she is not able to give up [her job] right now. She tells Mayuko to email her if anything happens, and says that if she can assist her, she will come to find Mayuko again.

When Mayuko comes home, her mom asks her why she's so late and she tells her she was out with an "email" friend, and her mom is curious as to how she had made a friend through the Internet.

Mayuji is sitting in her room thinking to herself. "Saturday, May 6. It is raining today. The waterdrops from the rain makes it way through the many things in Nature, drop by drop. But for the waterdrops in my heart, where would they flow to?"

Akiko is telling Yohei about how Mayuko has made a friend through email, and (with Mayuko listening outside the door), she says that things may have settled down, and there's been no action from Mayuko's company. Yohei doesn't agree, saying they can't disregard the impact of the magazine article, and it's best for Mayuko to give up her job. As Akiko is saying that she can't say that to Mayuko, outside the door Mayuko moves away silently and returns to her room.

Meanwhile Yohei is telling Akiko about how Shinichi knows Rina, and he's worried that they may be planning some kind of conspiracy together. He asks if Mayuko is still meeting with Shinichi and tells her that as Mayuko's mother, she should take better care of her daughter. He tells her not to allow Mayuko to see Shinichi again.

In her room, Mayuko receives an email from Shinichi, asking her to meet with him and Tear tomorrow. As she leaves the house the next day, her mom asks her where she's going, and she says to "meet Tear". Akiko is confused as to who "Tear" is, and says to Jun that she hopes it's not Shinichi she's meeting. She tells Jun about how Shinichi's acquainted with Rina.

Mayuko arrives at Shinichi's place, with her arms full of groceries for Tear. Taking the bags from her, Shinichi's astounded at how strong she is. As they go in, he asks her if something's wrong. She looks at him in surprise, and he says that "it's written all over your face". She starts to touch her face (she's so literal!) and he tells her that he's only joking. Shinichi reminds her of their promise (ubikiri) and tells her to tell him if something is bothering her at work.

Mayuko tells him that "she likes her work, that she likes the sky and she wants to better understand it". She said that her company has also told her that if she works hard, she'll be promoted to become a forecaster. But she says that it's not working out right now, her work is not going well and she is always being shouted at by Keiko (the nasty co-worker), and now her company wants to have a talk with her family.

Shinichi asks if everyone knows about her autism, and if her parents want her to give up the job, and she nods. Shinichi tells her that there's a lot of misunderstanding and prejudice towards autism in their society, and that is why she is being given such a hard time at work, and why her parents want her to give up her job. When Mayuko asks if it means that she cannot continue doing the work she enjoys, Shinichi says no, that's not true. Mayuko is thinking that perhaps she continues to learn from Shinichi and work harder at it, that things will be alright. Shinichi is happy that she wants to continue learning. Mayuko says that this is the first time she has found a job she liked by herself... and so she doesn't want to give it up, Shinichi says, because it's the first time she is taking pride in her job. "Pride?" [hokori], asks Makiko, "so what I'm feeling inside is called pride..." She wants to know if it will continue, and Shinichi tells her that "because your life is your own, you must do the things you want to do, that's most important." He then suggests they go outside, to look at the sky, and gives her a hand up.

Outside, Mayuko is commenting on the weather, saying that it's a sunny day with light winds. She defines "light winds" for Shinichi as wind strengths of between 1.6 and 3.3 and says that it's wind you can just feel on your face. Mayuko asks Shinichi if he sometimes thinks back on his past. She says that yesterday, when she is being shouted at, it reminds her of something in her past. She says that similar things happened repeatedly in her past, just like replaying parts of a videotape, and she can remember everything from before. It frightens her.

Shinichi asks if it brings back the exact feelings that she felt the first time, and that these emotions sweep over her like waves... (sounds like he identifies with what she's seeing...) She asks if it's the same for him, and he says yes, but he keeps remembering just one incident in his past. Mayuko says that she tries to just think about happy things, to fill up all the spaces in her mind. Shinichi asks her to sing her song again, the one she always sings. When she finishes singing, Shinichi tells her that every time he hears her song, he feels very peaceful inside. He says it's a very nice and gentle song, and that she must be a very gentle girl to be able to sing it. Mayuko says that she likes Shinichi's voice, and that it is very peaceful.

At Scoop, Rina is working on the second part of Mayuko's article. Jun comes to see her and they go off to a restaurant where she defends her actions by saying that she couldn't help it as it's her job, and anyway, hasn't her sister also taken advantage of the media, in which case it makes them even. Jun tells her that Shinichi is his teacher, and asks if Shinichi was behind the writing of this article. She says no, and then he asks her how she was acquainted with Shinichi.

At the park, Shinichi is trying to apologize to Mayuko, saying he had known of the article earlier but Mayuko is entranced by the gushing fountain in the midst of the park and does not pay attention.

When Shinichi returns to his house, he finds Jun waiting for him, and he is a bit surprised, telling Jun that he has just seen Mayuko safely home. Jun replies "so she was going out to meet you..." and tells him that he has just seen Rina and knows how Shinichi knew about the article before, and also the reason why he could not return to the medical profession. He asks Shinichi if he is still hurting over his lover's death and tells him not to go near his sister anymore. As Shinichi tries to explain, Jun suddenly bursts out "you haven't fallen in love with Mayuko, have you?" in a kind of incredulous way. Just before he goes, he tells Shinichi that if he has to see Mayuko again, then to do so in the position of a doctor.

At home, Mayuko goes to Yohei and tells him that she won't give up her job, and that her company has requested to see him and Akiko to discuss her autism. Her father naturally insists that she resign, and Akiko also adds that while she didn't want Mayuko to quit, she should nonetheless give it up if it made her unhappy. At this point, Jun comes in and tells his parents not to stress out over this and that he would take responsibility for Mayuko. But then Mayuko says that she won't trouble anyone and she just wants to continue to work hard on her own. She says that Shinichi taught her that one has to be responsible for oneself, and of course, Yohei freaks out at the mention of Shinichi's name and says that she has been tricked by his lies. Mayuko insists that he would not lie to her and goes up to her bedroom where she emails Shinichi, saying "even though she doesn't know how to decipher lies, she believes in him".

At work, Keiko goes up to Mayuko and apologizes for what happened yesterday, saying she didn't mean to be so harsh with her words. She then passes the forecast for Mayuko to type out, saying "if she had the confidence, she could make her own changes to it"... Mayuko doesn't realize from her tone that she is being sarcastic and asks if it's okay to make changes. Keiko then tells her "of course you can't. I was just joking."

As Mayuko is typesetting out the forecast, she notices that one of the forecasts is wrong and she pencils in the change ("sunny" to "rainy") on the draft copy and starts to correct it on the computer, but then remembers Keiko saying "no changes", so she changes it back to "sunny" again.

Meanwhile, Shinichi is in Sakuma's office, telling him that he thinks it's important Mayuko's company be made aware of the facts behind her autism. Sakuma agrees, saying that if they don't understand the situation properly, they may interpret her reactions as being willful or naive. Sakuma tells Shinichi to approach the company and explain it to them. He advises Shinichi to pay close attention to developments, saying that the situation won't be so easily resolved. For Mayuko to continue with her work, she will need professional help to support her.

Sakuma gets a call from Ino Shinota (Mayuko's superior) who asks him to come over to explain to them about Mayuko. Sakuma asks Shinichi to go in his place.

Back at work, Keiko realises the mistake on the forecasts, and asks Mayuko if she had already sent it and when Mayuko says yes, she asks to see the draft copy she gave Mayuko. She sees the pencilled in changes that Mayuko made and is clearly relieved and thanks Mayuko profusely. She then finds out that the changes hadn't actually been made and gets very upset, loudly blaming Mayuko for not correcting it when she knew it was wrong and calling her a "strange" person.

Shinichi arrives to see Keiko screaming at Mayuko, and Mayuko starts getting upset, asking if she was unable to do her job right because she has autism. Ino-san tries to calm her down but she starts to have a panic attack. Shinichi goes to her side, and calms her down.

Ino-san take Mayuko and Shinichi to a meeting room and tells them that he hoped she could continue working there, not just because she was hardworking but also because she had very strong analytical skills. However, he was worried that there would be more scenes like what happened just now.

Shinichi tells him that Mayuko suffers from "sensory overload", which means she will notice sounds and background details that normal people don't; that this heightened awareness will cause her to react more sensitively; and that if she is given too much information in one go, she will not be able to cope. But if such situations were avoided, she would be able to carry out her duties without any problems. Shinichi adds that Mayuko cannot fully comprehend the meaning behind words and so instructions should be given to her in a very specific and clear manner, so there's no room for obscurity.

Ino-san says that what was most difficult for them was not knowing what the right approach was, and he asks Shinichi if he would mind acting as a "consultant" so they could go to him with questions. At this point, one of the co-workers come in to say that they realised that it actually wasn't Mayuko's fault,a nd apologizes. Ino-san feels bad for Mayuko and tells her to take the rest of the day off.

As Shinichi and Mayuko are walking back, Shinichi confesses that he may have "lied somewhat... in not telling her coworkers the most important point." Mayuko is confused, saying she thought lying and not saying something were two different things. Shinichi says that he's lied to himself which confuses Mayuko even more (!) and asks "can that be done?" Shinichi replies (kind of obscurely) that that's the only way he could live with himself.... A bemused Mayuko replies that "she couldn't lie even if she wanted to."

Shinichi and Mayuko are at her house, talking to her parents. Shinichi tells them that her company wanted her to continue working there. Yohei naturally disagrees, and Akiko adds that Mayuko has already been subjected to a lot of suffering, and that even they [her family] couldn't handle it much more. She asks Mayuko to give up.Yohei starts to blame Shinichi for everything but then Mayuko tells him to stop, saying that Shinichi has taught her many things that she was never taught before, and she hopes he will continue. Jun starts to remind Shinichi of what he'd said before, but then Shinichi interrupts, saying he would become Mayuko's doctor, and that her company would be able to consult with him about Mayuko's situation. He asks them again to allow her to continue her work, and says that he would take care of Mayuko.
