Kimi ga oshietekureta koto ("Things You Taught Me") Episode 6
|
||||
At work, Mayuko and Shinichi are in a meeting with her co-workers. (Shinichi is introduced as a pychiatrist from the university and her physician by Mayuko's superior; he seems uncomfortable at the reference but does not say anything.) Mayuko says that she wants to continue working there as she was really interested in the weather, and that she would work hard and try not to cause problems for them. Her co-workers ask about autisim, and Shinichi starts to explain it to them. He asks them to try to understand her situation and to give her a chance, saying that they could come to him with any questions or problems and as Mayuko's doctor, he would offer all the assistance he could. Shinichi is at Sakuma's office, gathering all her medical records. Sakuma says that it's good to see Shinichi being like his old self again, and says that he believes Shinichi will now be able to get back on his feet again. He is relieved Shinichi is able to become a doctor because of Mayuko's situation, but then Shinichi says that he is not yet sure what path to follow, and Sakuma tells him that it's good to take things one step at a time and not to hurry into the decision to re-enter medicine. Akiko gets a call from Takuma asking her about how Mayuko was doing. Akiko tells him that they've managed to work things out and Mayuko is continuing her work at Weather World. She expresses her gratitude to Shinichi for his help, saying that he would act as Mayuko's consultant for her company, and that to take care of her, he was now going back sometimes to the hospital, and will be doing therapy for her, taking on the role of her doctor. (Takuma looks kind of sinister as he hangs up after they finish the conversation.) As his assistant comes in with his afternoon's appointments, he tells him to cancel them as he has something to take care of. At Mayuko's company, they're all in a meeting, analysing the weather trends and debating about what the forecast should be. They disband after agreeing on what it would be, but then Mayuko starts to argue that it should not be that way but everyone is going off as she continues to talk. One coworker, Izawa asks if she's talking to him, and he says that he can't tell if she doesn't look him in the face... another co-worker grabs her by the arm, forgetting about her autism, but then, seeing her nervous reaction apologizes. Izawa asks her to continue, saying he's interested in her opinion... but then she seems kind of ruffled and says that it's time to go home now. Keiko comes by and says that they can't leave yet with work being so busy right now, and reminds her that she was the one who asked everyone not to give her special treatment. She asks Izawa to back her up, and he says that it's best if you can stay for a while to help out. She says yes but is unnerved by the sudden change. It's late at night and there's a storm brewing outside. Mayuko is in her room looking up at her skylight. She sends an email to Shinichi: "Rain is the sky's tears," she writes, "and thunder is what is released from the chills of the heavens...the dancing movements of lightning draws me in...thunder's beauty comes from the colour of the deepest and darkest sorrow." She then asks Shinichi that "having returned to your former profession as a doctor, what is the color of his heart now", and tells him she wished her heart could "emanate the rays of sunshine". The next day, Mayuko is at her first therapy session with Shinichi. Shinichi starts by telling her that she needs to learn to look someone in the eyes when she talks to them, but when she practises it on Shinichi, he finds her stare too disconcerting and tells her "not to look at him like he's her lover". (!) He then tells her that people's expressions change with their emotions and a person can tell what someone is thinking by looking at them. He gives her a diagram with different expressions and tells her to remember them. Meanwhile, Chihiro is waiting for Jun outside his class, but when Jun comes out, he's in a really grumpy mood and tells her that he has no time as he is going to the hospital to pick up his sister. Back at the hospital, Shinichi is showing Mayuko some pictures she had drawn herself as a child. There is a happy one, and then there is a really dark and disturbed one, which seems to really upset Mayuko. At the end of the session, he gives her a reference book on "Communication Cues". Mayuko is picked up by Jun (and Chihiro), but as they leave, Mayuko has this sudden flashback about Jun saying "koko doko" (where are we now) when he was young. She then tells him that it was the "first day that you came to our home". Jun has no idea what she's talking about, but Takuma (who has come to the hospital to see Shinichi) passes by at this point and hears the exchange. Mayuko goes on to tell Jun that their father then told him that "from now on this will be your home" ("kyo kara koko ga omae no ie datte"), and that from that moment on, he became her brother. So Jun was adopted!! (Jun is shocked and sort of disbelieving, but Mayuko is unaware of the impact of her words - she only remembers it as a happy memory.) Takuma goes to see Shinichi, obstensibly to thank him for his kindness to Mayuko but then gives him a warning not to "repeat history by making the same mistake again" by starting an improper doctor-patient relationship. At home, Mayuko, Jun and Akiko are at the dinner table, with Mayuko still studying Shinichi's diagrams. Mayuko tells Akiko about how she'd recalled Jun's arrival to their home, and Akiko's reaction is visibly uneasy. Jun nonchalently leaves the table, pretending not to be bothered by the conversation but he's clearly attentive. Akiko is flustered and tells Mayuko that if Mayuko's finished with her dinner, she'll start clearing the table - but Mayuko is clearly in the midst of eating some rice!...Jun notes Akiko's reaction and is bothered by it. Later, Mayuko's still studying the diagrams in her room, and she turns to Jun (who's sitting on the floor) to say that she is still not able to read Jun's expression and asks him which one on her diagram corresponds to his expression?! Jun hears Yohei coming home and downstairs, Akiko starts to tell her husband about Mayuko's recollection, but then Jun bursts into their room and asks their father point-blank if what Mayuko said is true. Yohei denies it and brushes him off. At work, Mayuko is studying Shinichi's "Communication Cues" book (she's really studious!), having finished her work, and her supervisor (?) Izawa-san comes over and says (in a friendly way) that he's amazed by her efficiency. Keiko comes over and makes an offhand joke about Mayuko's assistance to Izawa and leaves. Mayuko sees Keiko leaving and says to Izawa that she must be very happy but Izawa then gossips to her that the happy one's "over there", pointing to another female colleague, saying that it's in the grapevine that she has a new lover. Ino-san joins in on the gossip, commenting that it does look that way, as she has recently "bloomed" and it must be from the romance. Mayuko is confused, and asks them if "finding a lover will make one prettier"? They say yes, and also nicer too. Mayuko then asks Izawa-san if he has a lover, and he says "no", at which she replies "that's good, I don't either". (!) Chihiro is worried about Jun and goes to see Shinichi, telling him about Mayuko's recollections that day after her therapy with him. Shinichi then goes to the park to look for Mayuko and Mayuko tells him that Jun seems to be angry with her, but she's not sure why. She says that even without blood ties, she still considered Jun her "real brother" and was happy that he was part of her family. She goes on to say that while she has family, and friends, she doesn't have a lover. She informs Shinichi that it's "normal for people to have lovers, and that it made them more beautiful and nicer". She then asks Shinichi what the difference is between family, friends and lovers, and Shinichi tells her that while you can love all three, a lover is someone you will want to be with for always. Mayuko ponders on his words, and comes up with a name... Tear! Shinichi is amused that Mayuko considers her cat her lover. Mayuko is feeling very happy, and starts to twirl around, and pulls Shinichi in to spin around together. Mayuko comes home and hears Jun talking to their parents, asking for baby pictures of himself, (of course there isn't any) and telling them not to lie to him anymore. Mayuko walks in, and Jun turns to her, saying Mayuko and I don't share blood ties, right? After he persists, Yohei gets angry and tells him to stop. Mayuko interrupts suddenly by saying that "even without blood ties, she considers Jun to be part of their real family and she loves him like a brother". Her family is struck by her words and finally Yohei admits that he got Jun from an adoption agency when he was 2 years old. Late that night, Rina is in Takuma's office, and Takuma is telling her about Mayuko's therapy with Shinichi. Takuma then adds (in a nastily ironic way) that if it were him, he would never be able to forgive himself for losing the person he loved most, and Rina tells him it's none of his business, but he argues it is his business, as Yohei is well-known in their business world. Rina gets up to leave, but Takuma grabs her ands makes a comment about "letting that man repeating the same mistake" ("ano otoko wa onaji machigai o kurikaeshite"). Akiko goes to see Shinichi about Mayuko and about Jun's adoption, telling him about what had happened. Shinichi says that sometimes, Mayuko can say things that shock him as well, but that she is a good "case study" for him. (Rina passes outside Shinichi's room and then goes to the adjoining room to listen in on the conversation.) Akiko's not sure if it's good for Mayuko to be exposed to the outside world but Shinchi tries to reassure her by saying that he'll do what he can to help Mayuko ("boku wa Mayuko-san wa iro no koto mamoru dekitai") After Akiko leaves, Rina goes to Shinichi and confronts him about Mayuko, telling him not to "repeat history". He tells her that it's not what she thinks, and that he and Mayuko had made a pact (ubikiri) as friends, and that now she's his patient. Rina gets worked up, saying that even though she wants very much to believe him, she doesn't and then asks he won't accept her, as she is just as concerned about him. Shinichi cuts her off, saying he knows what he is doing. Mayuko is chatting to Misaki via email (even though they're both in her room, using different computers!) telling her that she found other people's relationships very complex but that she would work hard to gain acceptance. Misaki warns her that if she tries too hard, she may get hurt. Mayuko gets up to play with her windchime, and Misaki comments that when you are surrounded by things that you like - like Mayuko's windchime, your heart becomes peaceful and happy. Mayuko then asks Misaki if she has a lover and Misaki replies that she didn't know what that was before, but that now she has someone who is a very nice and gentle person... but that she still thought it was best to be on her own. Mayuko doesn't reply, but she looks thoughtful as she fingers Shinichi's keychain. Mayuko is at Shinichi's place, visiting Tear. She tells Shinichi that she feels very peaceful with Tear and Shinichi by her side, and that she thinks she now understands what a lover is. She then asks Shinichi if a person can have two lovers, and Shinichi laughs, telling her that that would be rather greedy. Mayuko asks Shinichi to be her lover, which makes Shinichi uncomfortable, and he replies that he can't as he is her doctor. Mayuko reaches for Muki's picture, asking Shinichi if he has had a lover before, and that even though she is dead, he cannot forget her. Shinichi is in Sakuma's office, and Sakuma repeats his request for Shinichi to work with him again. Shinich hedges, and Sakuma teases him, saying that he understands that Shinichi is still adjusting, but if he doesn't put himself to the test, how will he find out. He then asks Shinichi to join in at some medical conference that evening. At WeatherWorld, Izawa-san invites Mayuko to join them after work for drinks, but Mayuko is a little apprehensive about joining a large group. Izawa mistakes her reluctance for a desire to be alone with him, and asks if she would prefer it to be just the two of them. (Mayuko says yes!) Shinichi is at a hotel (for the conference, I suppose) and sees Mayuko checking in with Izawa. He is disturbed but seems somewhat reluctant to interfere in what is not really his business. Meanwhile, Izawa takes Mayuko up to the hotel room, and starts seducing her, which makes Mayuko uneasy. When he starts to caress her, Mayuko seems to get a flashback, and starts to freak out. At this point, Shinichi hammers on the door, and Mayuko wrenches it open, and out of fright, throws her arms around him... - End of Episode Six - |
