("Things You Taught Me")

Episode Four

Mayuko is really happy that she's been hired by Weather World and sends an email to Shinichi telling him the good news, saying that it's the first time she's succeeded on her own. He emails her back, congratulating her and saying that now she won't have to go about, making her own predications anymore.

Saturday April 29. Mayuko is thinking that in another week, it will be time to prepare for the arrival of summer, but that in her heart, summer was already there.

Shinichi sees Mayuko in the park, testing the water temp., and he teases her that he thought she wouldn't be doing that anymore. She tells him that it would be her last time, and Shinichi says that from tomorrow, she can do the things she enjoys at work. Mayuko thanks Shinichi for his help, and he thanks her back. She's not sure why and he tells her it's because seeing her so happy makes him feel happy too. Shinichi believes that having encountered so many difficulties in the past, this time things should be smooth for Mayuko. He says that she is able to make weather predictions because "the sky is her companion". He tells her to come to him if she should encounter any problems. Mayuko's still thinking about what he said earlier, and asks Shinichi if her working hard will bring him happiness.

At the Amemiya residence, they're eating dinner together, and discussing the fact that Mayuko will start her new job tomorrow. Her father is also home early for once, and he remains silent throughout the whole discussion, until he suddenly cuts in and tells Mayuko that if she apologizes, he'll forgive her. Mayuko says "gomenasai", and the father accepts her apology.

The next morning, Jun's walking with Mayuko to the station. Suddenly, Jun tells Mayuko that if she didn't want to apologize then she didn't have to, since she should follow her own way for doing things. He leaves her, and as she is standing there by herself, she looks over at someone else's newspaper, and then says that today will not rain.

At home, Shinichi is looking at Mayuko's website, which says: Monday, May 1. Today will be sunny all day, so you can go out without worry. Today's prediction will be the last, thank you for your support.

Outside the company, Mayuko is rehearsing the words to say to her new colleagues before she goes in, but when she is introduced, she is not given time to say her prepared speech. Mayuko is given some reference materials to read, and as she starts to read it out loud, her colleagues give her strange looks. Her supervisor (Ino Shinota) who gave the materials to her, stops her by asking if she has any questions (he seems nice) and then passes her the satellite map for today, asking her opinion. Another co-worker called Keiko thinks that it's a bit too soon to give that to her, but he says that if she is capable of it, then why not. Her forecast will be useful as a comparison.

After looking at it for a short while, Mayuko says "sunny". Keiko says (a bit sarcastically) that Mayuko is able to tell in such a short and easy manner. Mayuko then adds that "between 4 and 6 pm, it will be cloudy." This shocks her colleagues, because they had not seen this. Mayuko explains that because of the rise in temperature during the morning, there will be corresponding pressure changes during noon-time, and will result in cloudy periods for a short while later. Her colleagues are much impressed, and Keiko is a bit put-off and says that even if she's right, it's just a coincidence. Mayuko replies that weather forecasts have nothing to do with coincidence.

At lunchtime, Mayuko goes out with two female colleagues (Keiko and another, kinder one who had invited her along) to lunch, but she is clearly unused to it, unintentionally cutting in front of others waiting in line, and unable to decide what to order (she seems bothered by some background noise). Keiko tells her to order the same thing they do, but when it comes, the food is what Mayuko is used to and she doesn't eat any of it. As they leave, Keiko tells her not to eat with them if she doesn't want to.

After work, Mayuko is singing to herself in the park, and Shinichi comes by and asks her if anything is wrong. Mayuko asks if he is able to tell what's going on with her, even inside her heart, and when he says no, she is relieved as she would "not be able to work hard on her own". Shinichi tells her that he didn't mean for her to do it all on her own, and that everyone needs support from others, and to share their happiness and sorrows. But Mayuko is worried that she can't do that, that she unable to understand Shinichi's feelings and to offer him any help. But Shinichi says that it's not true, and wasn't that why she had been practising her smile for him.

Mayuko then tells him about what happened to her at lunch with her colleagues, and how because it was her first time, she couldn't decide what to eat. Shinichi says he'll find a solution, but she is worried that it may cause him pain because he may have to resume a doctor's role. Shinichi says that it is okay, but it may take him a while [to find the solution], and tells her to go home as her mother will be worried about her. As he leaves, Mayuko tells him that the weather will be cooler tomorrow and to bring a jacket with him.

When she gets home, Mayuko tells her mom that work was fine and she was very happy. Akiko finds her lunchbox uneaten in her bag and Mayuko says that she went out to eat with her colleagues. Knowing that it's her first time in a restaurant, her mom and brother are astounded, and marvels at how calm she is, and her mom says that they did the right thing by letting her find her own work. Mayuko stays silent about her lunch experience and goes up to her room.

Shinichi goes to Sakuma's office to read up on the latest reference books on autism. He tells Sakuma that he is trying to find out how autism patients deal with experiences like eating out. Sakuma knows he's asking for Mayuko and says that while she may not be bothered by loud music, she will be sensitive to background noise that normal people don't notice - like the buzz from a fluorescent lamp. Flickering from a fluorescent light will also affect her. It is the presence of these things that are interfering with her ability to decide on the menu. So if they solve the problem of her surrounding environment, then she will not have a problem with the menu itself.

Sakuma tells Shinichi that ordinary people can adapt from past experiences, and when going to a new restaurant, they apply what they have learned from having gone to a previous restaurant. But for autism patients, each time they go to a new restaurant is like a brand-new experience, and without actually having been there before, they won't know what to do. So the problem is that they must become familiar with each particular restaurant itself. But even then they won't be able to fully overcome forget their fears, but that's because their memory is much better than normal people, so in fact, if they can create happy memories from their dining experiences, that too will be imprinted into their minds. Shinichi is very grateful to Sakuma for being so thorough, and then he goes back to his reference books.

Misaki emails Mayuko, asking about her job and telling her that life for her is very peaceful. Seeing Mayuko working so hard reminds her of something a bit painful in her own past. She says that one must sometimes slow down a bit, and that it's important for Mayuko to remember this as well. As Mayuko is reading her email (a bit restlessly, because she doesn't seem to agree with what Misaki is saying), an email comes in from Shinichi, asking her to go for lunch with him the day after tomorrow (May 4), and arranging to meet at 11:30 am in front of her company.

Rina comes over to Shinichi, apologizing for forcing him to go to her sister's commemoration. He says there's no need for her to apologize as it's his own choice. She then asks him if he means to return to his former profession as a psychiatrist, and he tells her that he knows what she'll say, that it'll remind him of the past. She says that she'd done her best, that she'd tried to prevent him from being hurt again before he returns to his medical profession, but she says that it was no use, that not only did he not turn to her, but his heart moved in the opposite direction, away from her. So now she has decided to give up.

Takuma calls the Amemiya residence, and asks after Mayuko. He'd heard that she had found a job with a weather company. Jun who answered the phone tells him that she's doing well. Takuma says that he's worried about the impact of Scoop's article on autism. He tells Jun that her sister is mentioned in it, and says that he should be prepared in case her job is threatened once her company finds out about her autism. He adds that he would be more certain about what to do if it had been a company he'd introduced to Mayuko, but since it is an "outside" company, he is not so certain of their reaction. Takuma says that he'll offer them whatever help he can. Jun is very worried and says that he'll inform his parents. Takuma tells him not to over-react, and that it could just be that he himself is worrying too much.

Shinichi and Mayuko go to the same restaurant where she had lunch with her colleauges, but she doesn't want to go inside. He asks if it's because she had bad memories, and when she nods, he says that he will give her some good memories of this restaurant. When they go inside, Mayuko is bothered again by the "noise" and Shinichi decides that it's the loud airconditioner sounds that is coming out of a vent. He takes her to a table that is far from the vent. When they are given the menu, he says that it is hard to decide from such a variety and tells her to first choose three things she wants to eat, and then pick one among them. When they leave the restaurant, Shinichi tells Mayuko that she won't have any problems next time. Mayuko says that with Shinichi, she feels that she is becoming more and more capable, and she wants to learn even more things. Shinichi says that he'll work hard too. He wants to make a promise with her ("ubikiri") by linking little fingers, saying that if Mayuko were to run into any problems, she will come to him for help.

Jun buys a copy of Scoop, and inside, finds the article on autism. He shows the article, which has Mayuko's photo, to his mom but they quickly hide it when Mayuko comes home. Akiko asks her if everything's okay (she's worried that her daughter will know about the magazine) but Mayuko answers only that her lunch went well and she was very happy.

Akiko shows the magazine to Yohei, worrying about her company's reaction when they find out. Jun thinks they will react adversely to the news. The father says that they should have listened to him, and Jun says it's his fault too, that he shouldn't have helped her to put up her Internet weather website. Akiko is really upset by the article, saying that it's unfair this should happen when Mayuko's doing so well and so happy.

At work, Mayuko is photocopying, and her mean co-worker is commenting on how dumb and childish her actions are. The nicer co-worker goes up to her and asks her to eat together. Mayuko suggests going back to the restaurant they were at before. At the restaurant, she repeats what she had done with Shinichi.

Back at work, everyone gathers together for a meeting. One of her coworkers is analysing the information from the satellite maps, forecasting that the sky will be overcast in the morning, and sunny during the day. They are discussing the wording for the weather forecast, thinking that it would be too rash to say "sunny" and Keiko is suggesting that they say "there may be a chance of rain", even though it is not too likely. Mayuko interrupts the discussion, saying "it will rain", and Keiko argues that it is not likely from the satellite map but adds cattily that since she doesn't have the background, it is not surprising that she should get it wrong. Mayuko insists that it will rain, explaining about the recent hikes in sea temperature effecting pressure changes, etc. The others are convinced by her reasoning, and decide to word tomorrow's forecast to say that there'll be rain. The meeting over, everyone gets up and disbands, but Mayuko is still sitting there. Keiko turns back and says that she can go, adding that she doesn't understand why Mayuko needs to be told to do very little thing.

At school, Jun waits to speak with Shinichi after class. Jun shows the Scoop article to Shinichi, asking what they should do. Shinichi is worried, saying that her company doesn't know about her autism. Jun comments that it hadn't been easy for Mayuko to find a job that she liked, and now, having succeeded, will have to face more difficulties from their reaction to her autism. He doubts anyone will understand Mayuko's feelings. Shinichi says that it will be quite difficult to explain the article to her company. Jun thinks it'll be better for Mayuko if the whole thing is resolved earlier. Jun seems to be blame Shinichi, saying that while he was grateful to Shinichi for supporting Mayuko, it has resulted in her getting hurt. Shinichi warns Jun that he must consider Mayuko's future, and not to act rashly. He says that if they give Mayuko the support she needs, that they will find a way out. Jun tells Shinichi not to get too involved in this incident, and not to push his sister so much. He says that making her work so hard, and then seeing all her efforts come to nothing is very painful.

After Mayuko leaves work, she finds Shinichi waiting for her. Mayuko is surprised to see him, saying that there were no problems at work today and everything has gone smoothly, including lunch. Shinichi warns her that there may be problems coming up, but Mayuko is not worried, saying that so long as she has Shinichi to teach her, it won't be a problem. She starts to recite the things he'd taught her - about choosing three things from the menu before deciding on one; to move away from a noisy area to a quieter one; the need to support each other in life; how you must choose a meaningful job so as not to have any regrets; how to show someone you want to become their companion with a smile; and how she was not alone in the world. Shinichi tells her that she must not forget that, that she is not alone in the world. Mayuko asks if he didn't know that there is no way she can forget, that she can remember everything that happens to her.
