("Things You Taught Me")

Episode 7

Shinichi is very upset with Mayuko, and as he is walking her home, he tells her that what she has just done was very serious and that she should express herself more clearly, saying "i don't understand" when she doesn't understand, and saying "i don't know" when she doesn't know. Mayuko asks whether lovers have to kiss and be that close, saying she doesn't like that feeling, and he replies that between real lovers, it's a natural reaction but it's not something that one can just talk about. He adds that obviously Izawa is not her lover if she feels repulsed by him. Mayuko is a bit cowed by his tone, but doesn't really understand what made him so upset. Even Akiko notices that he seems angry when he drops Mayuko off at her home, but comforts Mayuko by saying that Shinichi can't be all that upset if he's still willing to walk her home.

Yohei, who sees Shinichi dropping Mayuko off, also sensed his anger and calls him up, asking him why he was upset, and goes on to talk about Jun, and how Shinichi was indirectly responsible for stimulating Mayuko's memory. He says that Shinichi should be able to relate to how difficult it was for them with an autistic child, and that they have felt like giving up on Mayuko many times, if it had not been for Jun. Yohei then asks about Mayuko's therapy, and asks Shinichi to try to avoid doing anything that would harm her relationship with her brother.

At Takuma's office, he is enlisting Rina's help to break up Mayuko and Shinichi, but she won't unless he gives her his real motive. Takuma tells her about the incident of how Shinichi's therapy has inadvertantly caused Mayuko to remember about Jun's adoption and he doesn't want her to recall other past incidents, as he says that Mayuko has been involved in something in the past that, if she were to remember it, would bring her a lot of pain. Rina wants to know what this incident is, and Takuma shuts the door (presumably before telling her this deep dark secret.... bukimi na!!)

Mayuko sends an email to Shinichi, telling him that when he is angry, he is like a stranger to her and not the "sensei" (teacher) she normally knows. She asks for her Sayama-sensei to come back and to always be her doctor and her friend.

It's very busy at Weather World and Izawa passes some documents for Mayuko to work on but he's too impatient to explain to her properly and she tells him that without clear instructions, she cannot do the work. He decides to give it to someone else instead, and Ino-san goes over to her and says (kind of slyly) that "up to yesterday, you'd been doing fine". He goes on to say that he is sympathetic with her situation but she must try harder, and if she is always saying that she "doesn't know or doesn't understand" something, it will make Izawa think that she is being willful and not cooperative. Izawa rushes up at this point to tell her to stop daydreaming because they're really busy today. In the ensuing rush, Mayuko accidentally deletes a computer file - when Izawa had meant for her to trash the paper file on the desk! Naturally when Izawa finds out about her mistake, there is a big commotion.

Meanwhile Shinichi is at Sakuma's office. He is feeling guilty about cancelling Mayuko's therapy session to avoid her talking about them becoming lovers but Sakuma reassures him, saying that it takes a good doctor to be bothered by what he'd done. Sakuma then says that he hoped Shinichi could regain his confidence through Mayuko's therapy, and tells him not to worry too much and to just concentrate on facing Mayuko.

Ino-san is telling his boss about Mayuko's mistake and how the whole team is feeling hostile towards her. Meanwhile, Mayuko's sitting outside on a separate table reading a glossy book with pictures of nature and rainbows. She reads this dialogue about how "Rainbows are the passage-way between Heaven and Earth, and at the end of the rainbow, there are treasures ("takara mono"). But even when one expends all effort to find the treasures inside one's heart, the rainbow's end still cannot be reached."

In a classroom, Jun is telling Chihiro his feelings about his adoption, and he says that he feels kind of stupid for caring so much about Mayuko when she's not his real blood sister. Chihiro says that it's not true and she envies the two of them for being able to care so much about each other, and that Jun's caring nature was something she really admired.

Ino-san is telling Mayuko that because of her mistake, she will be "transferred" from the WeatherWorld team for a while; when Mayuko asks "how long? forever", he says "maybe." (I'm not sure whether she got fired or just suspended...)

Back at home, Akiko is telling Yohei that Mayuko has been kind of strange since coming home, and she asks him if they should contact Shinichi, but then Yohei says "no, jun will do"... at which point Akiko then asks if it's still ok now to rely on Jun...

Meanwhile Jun goes into Mayuko's bedroom, and Mayuko finds it a little strange that he would come see her now when he has been avoiding her before. She asks him if he has been crying, and he tells her that it's because he has problems that he's kept bottled up inside, and he's not sure what he should do. Mayuko asks if one cries because they feel sad, but Jun says that he doesn't know how to explian what he's feeling to her. Mayuko then says that she can't understand his feelings anymore than she can understand what others are feeling, and this is probably why she has lost her job. She goes on to say that Jun has always been the one who's stood by her side and helped her and she asks him not to leave her, even if he's feeling angry or sad. Jun promises Mayuko to always be by her side. (It's kind of a touching moment...)

Yohei calls Shinichi as he is worried since Mayuko has not ventured outside the house at all recently, and he asks Shinichi to call her company to find out what's wrong. Meanwhile, Mayuko is all dressed to go out but as she leaves her room, she hears what her father is saying and she goes back inside her room again.

Shinichi goes to WeatherWorld but as Ino-san has another meeting to attend first, he ends up talking to Izawa. Izawa offers him an apology for last time but then defends his actions by saying that Shinichi can probably sympathize with the situation and how the misunderstanding came about. Shinichi tries to explain to Izawa that Mayuko is not like a regular girl and is incapable of grasping the "nuances" of a relationship. Izawa doesn't agree, however, as he believse that Mayuko is not all that different from regular girls, saying that "even for normal girls, it's not that unusual for them to take fright if it's their first time." Izawa tells Shinichi that Mayuko should be capable of falling in love like a regular person, and that he (Izawa) saw her as a "regular person".

At home, Jun goes up to Mayuko's room and tries to interest her in working on her website, but she doesn't pay any attention to him, and continues to stand in front of her windchime, twirling Shinichi's star keychain. Jun goes up to her and tries to get her attention more forcefully, but he ends up upsetting the windchime and it goes crashing on the floor along with the keychain. Mayuko gets upset and starts to scramble for the keychain but she can't find it, and she starts to freak out. As she is saying "it's not there, not there...", she gets this flashback of a voice saying "not there, not there" and then there are some images of schoolchildren advancing forward in a menacing way and tearing up what looked like a schoolbook or magazine.... Mayuko cries out "stop" and loses control.

At this point, Shinichi arrives and runs up to her room, calming her down. They go to the park, where Mayuko tells him about how she'd lost the job even though she tried really hard, and that she didn't think she would ever be like a normal person and be able to understand others' emotions - not Jun's, not Shinichi's... and that she won't be able to be Shinichi's lover.

Shinichi tells her that it's not true, that she already has feelings of sadness and love which belong solely to her, but it's just that she has a different way from other people of dealing with emotions. He asks her to define "love" and she replies that it's like two spirits linking fingers ("tamashii to tamashii no ubikiri"). Shinichi then tells her that a lover is the person you want beside you in times of pain and sorrow, and Mayuko asks if she can be by Shinichi's side when he's in pain, and he says yes. It starts to rain and they seek shelter in a small wooden playhouse where they start to sing Mayuko's favourite song. Suddenly Mayuko sees a rainbow appear.

At Sakuma's office, Shinichi is studying Mayuko's case and he starts to discuss with Sakuma about how he can help Mayuko understand what other people's sorrows are like. Sakuma replies that there are many different types of sorrows, and that the root of the problem lies in Mayuko lacking some intrinsic things that normal people have. Shinichi says that he hopes Mayuko will never have to experience sorrow again. Sakuma leaves him to see a patient and while he's settled down with his books, Rina drops by to see him, but he doesn't seem pleased to see her. She sees Mayuko's file on the table and grabs it, and when he tries to take it back from her, the contents spill out and she sees the messed-up drawing. She asks Shinichi about the drawing and he tells her that it's a drawing Mayuko did when she was young, about something that deeply affected her, but he's not sure what it is. He then tells her to leave as he is very busy.

As Shinichi returns home that night, he notices that Tear is really ill (the cat's been off her food for some time) and he tries to call Mayuko at home, but Jun who answered the phone, says his sister is already in bed and that it can wait till tomorrow. Shinichi emails Mayuko, telling her that there's something wrong with Tear and he's taking Tear to the hospital.

Rina goes to see Takuma, telling him about the strange drawing. She asks Takuma if the incident that, in Shinichi's words, "deeply affected" Mayuko is the one that Takuma talked about and Takuma asks her to describe in detail the drawing to him.

At the hospital, the doctor's done some tests but is not sure what's wrong, and says he'll have to put Tear under further observation. Shinichi goes to wait outside the room, and while he's sitting them, he starts to think about the past times with Mayuko and Tear.

The next morning, Mayuko sees the email and rushes to the hospital. But she's too late and Tear's already dead. She doesn't seem to be able to fully understand that and when Shinichi takes her back to his place, she goes to Tear's usual resting places, saying "he was there...and there...and there." Shinichi tells her that Tear will not be coming back ever again because Tear is dead, and Mayuko starts to cry. He then tells her that what she's feeling right now is "sorrow", and she asks him if sorrow is always that painful, and if it was the same for Shinichi. She then apologizes to him for not understanding his pain before. As Shinichi watches her crumpled at his feet, crying, tears start to fall from his eyes. Mayuko then asks him if he'll always be there, and tells him he must never leave and that he cannot die, because she wouldn't know what to do without him. Shinichi pulls Mayuko into his arms, and as they are embracing, Rina walks in and sees them, and she wordlessly turns away and leaves.

Mayuko then pulls away, apologizing over and over again to Shinichi, saying that she still can't bear to be hugged, and also that she still didn't understand what he was feeling...
